Man, I loved the ending. It was disturbing hearing Errol do those various accents in the finale, and seeing just how f*cked up his relationship/house/life was. I though the set design of "Carcosa" was incredible as well and so damn creepy. Then when Rust has that spiraling vortex hallucination in the end - man, I just thought it was all so perfectly trippy and satisfying.

But that guy is forever Errol to me now, I cannot unsee him as that character. In everything he pops up in, it's Errol, and it's jarring. One of the most frightening characters ever.

How some people feel about BOB being the best tv of all time is how I feel about True Detective. Amazing season 1. Season 1 is where the discussion on True Detective ends, right? It should be treated as a stand alone.

I think all 3 seasons stand alone, with season one being the unequivocal best, but season 3 was VERY good. It had me as invested as the first season.

Agreed.

Not sure season 2 would've been thought of as terrible if it had a different name.

Not saying it was great but everyone was comparing it to season 1.

Call it "The Vince Vaughan Show" and people might think differently of it.

I think a more tour de force actor than Vaughn in season 2 and it would have been substantially better.
A large part of what 1 and 3 so great was the amazing acting, and you basically did a wedding crashers reunion for season 2. Was never going to be on the same level.

I thought Colin Ferrell was exceptional in season 2. The story was just sloppy as hell.

Season 1 may be my favorite single season of television of all time. At worst, it's number 2 behind season 4 of The Wire. This needs to happen.

Season 2 was a little rough, but Colin Ferrel was great. Vince was a fish out of water.

No, different project. Pizzolatto was specifically referring to a True Detective follow up with the characters of Rust and Marty. The is something else entirely. Though, hopefully it sparks the True Detective reunion sooner rather than later.

I re-read the first few pages a day or two ago and thought the exact same thing. Basically everyone is in agreement over how incredible the show is, everyone's theories are either damn close or, at the very least, interesting and informed, and there's zero fighting/complaining, about politics or otherwise. It was such a simpler time, one I wish we could go back to. Personally speaking, 2014 is also basically the last time I remember the world feeling any semblance of normal.

I agree with you on 2014 / 2015 being the turning point.

2015 was the first time that I noticed the homeless population in LA being over the top. It was there before but, 2015 is when it crossed the point of no return.

Season 1 remains the single best TV experience of my life. I've rewatched this show about 5 more times over the years and it's still spectacular. I will forever remember watching the Episode where the catatonic girl starts screaming in terror at Cohle in that home, as I was home alone, watching in the dark around midnight and had the volume up...just as that scene ended, the icemaker dumped its ice in the tray in the freezer, and I about had a heart attack.

That show made me realize that MM was an absolute stud of an actor. Couldn't possibly have been further from his rom-com characters in movies. And WH was absolutely greatness as a failed man. That entire last episode with the LMM and his sister was so incredibly messed up and that Pirate-looking chamber that the final fight took place in was so perfect.

I didn't enjoy Season 2 very much, for many of the reasons listed before. Season 3 was great, but I felt like the last episode was sort of ram-rodded to a finish. And Season 4 should've been better, but I felt like it was very disappointing.
