I can see that but the broken light would have nothing to do with that. The truck itself and him driving would be recognizable. The broken tail light doesn't help make him any more recognizable.
I think it's just symbolism to show that things have been broken for so long and he's made no attempt to fix them. Also showing how focused/engulfed he has become on working the case he hasn't bothered with the tail light.
