Also, put me down in camp that thinks the broken light is a clue. There's no way he's been driving around with a broken tail light for 10 years. I bet he only uses his truck when he WANTS to be seen.

Bingo.

Say what??

I can see that but the broken light would have nothing to do with that. The truck itself and him driving would be recognizable. The broken tail light doesn't help make him any more recognizable.

I think it's just symbolism to show that things have been broken for so long and he's made no attempt to fix them. Also showing how focused/engulfed he has become on working the case he hasn't bothered with the tail light.

The implication that I referred to pages ago about the 10 point buck was not that Marty was involved; the way he answered the 'ever been hunting' question led me to believe that he had only been once and got the 10 pt. Now, given that- who took him? My guess is his father in law. And where did the antlers end up? I never noticed a mount in his house, maybe he wasn't that into it. So he didn't care about the final disposition of the antlers.

I just assumed after he told Marty to buy him the beer that he's too broke to get it fixed and hasn't had a real job since quitting the force. More evidence that he hasn't been out doing anything other than staying in LA and running down the case.

I'm talking about the fact he supposedly dropped off the grid for ten years (according to the cops). IE - no moving violations or citations issued to him by police officers for a broken taillight, which is probably a really common citation issued. There is no way he's avoided contact w police officers driving all over in a truck w a broken taillight.

I'm saying he knows everyone knows that his truck, and it's been somewhere in storage until very recently

He wants Marty to buy him the beer because Cohle put a lot of work into resolving the case that Marty may get partial credit for like all the other times. Getting a free beer from Marty is the least Marty could do for Cohle.

I thought you only got pulled over for broken tail lights if you were a minority. We are talking about Louisiana, after all.

Interesting theory, but I didn't get that impression from his answer at all.

But I would be really surprised if someone that is a cop in Southern Louisiana had only been hunting once in his life. That would make no sense.

One underrated aspect of episode was Rusts talk with dad of missing bayou boy. As a parent, that scene was absolutely haunting. I see why Rust, who knows what it feels like to lose a child, is obsessed with giving the left behind answers.

marty's wife is 90% plus responsible for what happened. i don't know how you can see it any other way. that's not on Rust.

I absolutely LOVED the conversation with the old tent revival preacher. Man...something about that whole exchange was just...engrossing?

What's wild is by the time last nights episode was over, all of the Rust vs. Marty stuff with the wife had almost made me forget all of the stuff prior (the talk with the dad of the missing son, the tent revival guy, tension building with their superior officer, etc.). It was almost like it was two different episodes.

But in the end, week after week, this show is one of the fastest hours of TV I've ever experienced. I look up, and it's over and I'm frustrated because I just want it to keep going! I watched the last 5 seasons of Sopranos during their run (didn't binge watch them late). I did the same with Rome, Deadwood, Justified, SOA, Lost, Boardwalk Empire, and Game of Thrones. I binge watched The Wire last year for the first time, and the wife and I are doing the same with Breaking Bad right now. And so far, none of them compare to this when it comes to driving me crazy waiting for Sunday night, and the apprehension of what happens next. The closest is GoT.

For the ones that watched The Wire and BB live as they were happening....any comparison to this thus far? Some comparisons but different?

I dont think anyone watched The Wire when it originally aired.

The Wire and BB were similar for me. The cymbals that ended each episode of the Wire always pissed me off. It just meant i had to wait to see what was going to happen next.

sure.

although binge-watching the wire in 2014 loses a lot.

that show is becoming pretty dated.

Maybe.

But I LOVED it. After it was done it was easily my favorite show ever. So at this point...dated or not....10 years later it still holds up.

it's a good show

but the current level of writing we're getting to enjoy is just much more sophisticated

same goes for Sopranos

standing on the shoulders of giants and that whole bit

True Detective is borderline LOST. So many off the wall theories and speculations, having to wait each week. I haven't seen this much excitement on a thread since the LOST days of season 3

She is in Banshee - Cinemax original series.

She plays a sex-obsessed Amish girl. No, I'm not joking.

Harrelson's acting in that scene alone was priceless. You could SEE the raging debate going on in his mind.

Back to the reason why Cohle tells Marty that he is buying the beer. I thought it was because Cohle looks at Marty's car (it looks like a Caddy to me, but I am not sure) and figures that he can afford to buy him a beer. Man, I really love those old Ford trucks (is that '95 or so--anybody know)?

I have been trying to get some of my co-workers to watch this show, but none of them have HBO. I really want to discuss this with folks at work, but I don't think it's in the cards. I guess I'll just have to get my True Detective fix on Texags. Anyone know of any good TD podcasts out there?

The great thing is that every conversation, scene, interaction has so much tension and drama. It's great to see writing that creates this without action packed elements like gunfighting, explosions, sword fights, killings, battle scenes, high speed car chases, etc (see SOA, BB, and somewhat GoT). Just a conversation between two people sitting in a shop can bring your pulse up and suck you in.

I think the writing, casting, acting, cinematography, costumes, sets all come together perfectly and contribute to making this show one of the best.

Careful what you wish for. Our productivity has waned significantly...There are 3 or 4 of us who are obsessed, and literally every morning we have a discussion talking about theories, things we have missed, etc. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome. But then I am scrambling the rest of the day.

I think Cohle asked Marty to buy the beer because a) that's his that's his personality, b) he's poor and c) that's how their relationship ~17 years ago and they're picking up where they left off. I don't think it's anything that we need to read real deep into.

While I think many of the symbols are purposeful, I think many are overthinking the show. At its core it's a crime drama, every piece of exposition had come through rational deduction.
If I had to guess the ending, that will be juxtaposed against someone or something who can't be understood in simple terms, and we will be left with the feeling that evil or just bad behavior that can't be easily seen or understood is among us. That has been the undercurrent of the show from the beginning, even among the main characters.
Or maybe not

You guys should just have a standing Monday meeting for discussing TD. Call it the TD Updates meeting. Put it on your Outlook Calendar and get a meeting room reserved for 2 hours. Pack of Pall Malls and a sixer of Lone Star for everyone. Nothing too snooty.
