I also want to say how hilarious and awesome the entire scene was once they got to Ledoux's house the way they describe the story as it's playing out completely different.

He is now (I forgot) but I'm not clear on when he left the force for the private sector. Was in recently? Was it in 2002? Either way I think Hart would still have some connections on the force that might be willing to do him a solid.

SP looks like you'd need at least one other guy with you.

I am inclined to believe Cohle and Hart are working together in secret, but the look on Hart's face when they're presenting the evidence seems to suggest otherwise.

For some reason every time Hart calls Cohle an ******* or gets that kinda "childish" whine with him it makes me laugh.

How did Rust not solve the cases and emerge during all this the off the grid time 2002 to 2012? There's a ton more to explore in that timeframe. There's the possibility that Rust found the Yellow King at some point and got drawn into that world - an Apocalypse Now type scenario. And maybe Rust knows exactly who did the 2012 murder, and he could have prevented it. Maybe he infiltrated the underworld and couldn't break out. Lots of possibilities still out there.

Everything about this series is fascinating though, not only the speculation of the case. The continued destruction of Hart and his family is haunting as well - I keep expecting one of the girls to die at any given moment.

I think Avril Lavigne Hart was corrupted by her Grandpa and his high society devil worshipping cronies when she was a child. That would explain the sex drawings, the devils three way, the goth makeup, and Marty's speech about inattention being his biggest sin rather than infedilty. He told his girlfriend to be careful, but never told his daughter

I also saw a screenshot where someone pointed out she had drawn the spiral on her wall as a child.

I think this show will likely replace The Wire as my favorite show of all time. This is storytelling at it's finest and Matthew McConaughey should win every award possible for his portrayal as Rustin "Rust" Cohle. I think this show will become just as important as The Sopranos in terms of setting the ceiling for what can be done on television.

The only issue is that this will be the only season with this story and actors. Whatever they do next, will be totally different.

Now, if it can be just as engaging and great with a different story and more importantly, different actors besides McConaughey and Woody, then yeah... this show will be something special.

However these 8 episodes have definitely climbed to the top of the mountain, which is really saying something considering its peers.

SP, that's exactly my point. This show is a game changer because of that. Obviously we will have to see how this season plays out, as well as subsequent seasons, but assuming the quality does not significantly diminish without WH and MM (which might be assuming a lot), this could lead other networks to delve into shows with stand alone seasons (obviously FX has already touched on this with AHS, but that show sucks) and other big name actors might start considering this as a viable option to exert their talents. All they have to do is sign up for a show for one season then move on to something else.

If that prediction was halfway correct I'd be pissed.

I do NOT want them to go super natural on this thing. I don't mind some devil worship stuff but that seems nuts. And I don't want some 20 years ago drunken pact between some frat buddies regarding their future children.

The reddit link raises a good question - have we discussed where/how Hart's daughter was exposed to the disturbing imagery she was outwardly displaying in 1995? The reddit link makes the leap that she has been involved in the satanic rituals with her family.

I assumed she has accidentally seen her Dad's casework files or overheard him discussing it, or maybe she heard stuff from other kids. Or maybe they had cable in 1995 and she was watching late night HBO/Cinemax. How important will it be to know the source of those 1995 images from his daughter?

And internetfan02, that's a question I've been wondering the answer to for awhile. It is quite obvious that Hart's oldest daughter has been raped. She shows an inappropriate knowledge for her age of sexual acts and she eventually turns to substance abuse. Both actions common among childhood rape victims. Who was she raped by? I really couldn't guess.

I've read lots of Sepinwalls reviews over the last few years and I don't recall him ever having one that went 2 pages long (unless this is a new site former he's using). And last nights went 2 pages. You can tell he's really digging this thing too.

Rustin Cohle in horse cult.

I don't care for anagram theories, if you try hard enough, you can make plenty of anagrams work. The writer has said himself that he is not trying to trick us. Rust is not the killer, and because there is very little evidence to suggest he is, and they have shown him multiple times to put in an immense amount of work into finding the killer, it would feel like such a ridiculous twist of events to have him suddenly become the killer.
