Have watched the pilot twice now (wanted to get clarification on a few fuzzy plot points). Thoroughly enjoyed it the first time, became slightly obsessed with it the second time. Such an amazing episode. It's Seven meets Zodiac, the later of which is one of my all-time favorite movies. But with a Louisiana twist. Harrelson's reactions to McConaughey alone are worth it.
I also just finished reading the original draft of the pilot (I'm currently writing an autopsy scene and wanted to see how they did theirs, ended up reading the whole thing). A few interesting tidbits...
- The script is before casting, and basically the exact same, except the original draft took place in Arkansas. And McConaughey's character was from Louisiana. My guess is they got some pretty big tax breaks to shoot in Louisiana and that's why they changed locations. Also with McConaughey himself being from Texas.
- The bulk of the story - the flashbacks - were originally set in '90 as opposed to '95. Present day was 2010 as opposed to 2012. Curious why they changed the flashback date that much.
- Instead of "The Taxman," McConaughey's nickname was "The Banker." Except with the exact same explanation. Glad they didn't stick with it.
- Finally, there was a really interesting bit of dialogue from Harrelson's character in the present day that was cut in the final version (speaking about McConaughey's character)...
"I didn’t really mind he was quiet. Mainly nobody understood what he was doing here. Brought in from Louisiana, and he wasn’t interested in making buddies. Bobby and Steve and the other guys thought he was stuck up, like he thought he’s better than other people. But up close it was more complicated. More like a paranoia. We didn’t know what he’d been doing. Before CID... I didn’t know about all that undercover work until later."
It's that "undercover" bit that got my attention. Combined with Harrelson talking about McConaughey's Texas record being mysterious or whatever, I'm wondering if there's a whole ulterior motive / undercover aspect to what McConaughey is really doing there. I mean, obviously there's something going on behind the scenes, I'm just wondering how deep it goes.
Cannot wait to see how this plays out...
