I was mesmerized by the acting. Once it started I could not stop watching until it was over. How have these two actors never worked together before?

Really enjoyed it. Mcconaughey's character seems a little bit overboard in the eccentric department (shocker, I know), but still enjoyed it.

Agree with Duberstein. They could've made MM a little less whacko than he is but he plays the part well regardless.

I kind of find it odd we are already casting judgments on MM's character after the pilot of a series in which we have absolutely no idea where it goes.

Have watched the pilot twice now (wanted to get clarification on a few fuzzy plot points). Thoroughly enjoyed it the first time, became slightly obsessed with it the second time. Such an amazing episode. It's Seven meets Zodiac, the later of which is one of my all-time favorite movies. But with a Louisiana twist. Harrelson's reactions to McConaughey alone are worth it.

I also just finished reading the original draft of the pilot (I'm currently writing an autopsy scene and wanted to see how they did theirs, ended up reading the whole thing). A few interesting tidbits...

- The script is before casting, and basically the exact same, except the original draft took place in Arkansas. And McConaughey's character was from Louisiana. My guess is they got some pretty big tax breaks to shoot in Louisiana and that's why they changed locations. Also with McConaughey himself being from Texas.

- The bulk of the story - the flashbacks - were originally set in '90 as opposed to '95. Present day was 2010 as opposed to 2012. Curious why they changed the flashback date that much.

- Instead of "The Taxman," McConaughey's nickname was "The Banker." Except with the exact same explanation. Glad they didn't stick with it.

- Finally, there was a really interesting bit of dialogue from Harrelson's character in the present day that was cut in the final version (speaking about McConaughey's character)...

"I didn’t really mind he was quiet. Mainly nobody understood what he was doing here. Brought in from Louisiana, and he wasn’t interested in making buddies. Bobby and Steve and the other guys thought he was stuck up, like he thought he’s better than other people. But up close it was more complicated. More like a paranoia. We didn’t know what he’d been doing. Before CID... I didn’t know about all that undercover work until later."

It's that "undercover" bit that got my attention. Combined with Harrelson talking about McConaughey's Texas record being mysterious or whatever, I'm wondering if there's a whole ulterior motive / undercover aspect to what McConaughey is really doing there. I mean, obviously there's something going on behind the scenes, I'm just wondering how deep it goes.

Cannot wait to see how this plays out...

That's an interesting perspective. I remember when I first saw the previews and in some images MM was clean cut and in others he's hairy and worn down, I wondered (when I saw the title of the show) if he was an undercover. But the after seeing the preview a couple of times, something clued me into it being a flashback so I dismissed the idea. That'd be a pretty neat angle if it went that direction!!!

Wtached it on the DVR last night. I thought it was very well directed and the acting was excellent. MM does such a good job with character driven roles (Mud comes to mind). I like the darkness and weirdness to it that some many have compared to Seven.

The only negative I have is that it seemed to drag a little bit and I caught myself not paying attention. I will say it was late and stayed up a bit past the normal bedtime to watch it. I think they could have helped it a little with some music.

I can't wait to see how MM ends up looking the way he does in the present-day. Did anyone else have the thought that MM is in jail? His get up looked like a prison jumpsuit, his lack of a haircut, and they way he was asking for things reminded me of a prisoner.

prisoners don't have "days off". he wanted the beers because it was the start of his days off. also, do prisoners have cash on them?
Bunk Moreland

my guess at this point is he just kinda fell off the grid after undercover work then the crazy case and is roughing it working somewhere.

Nice insight, TCTTS...wasn't there something mentioned in the pilot that alluded to him doing undercover work? It wasn't what you referenced, but after watching the pilot I could have sworn something had mentioned him doing undercover work.

This is gonna be a fun ride.

he said he used to do narcotics, which often deals with undercover work. also, they said his records from texas were sealed.

Good point on the cash observation. I just thought he came off as very prisoner like.

That's right. That's where I inferred he had done some secretive work, maybe not undercover.

When I first saw the trailer my initial thought was that the long haired MM was a flashback to when he was undercover and clean cut MM was in the present day. He had been called in from the outside to help with a case similar to something he had seen while undercover. I guess that can still be the case.

^ When they're interviewing the victim's ex-husband in jail, and he says something to the effect of, "You know how it is, you want to be married, but only half the time," the second time I watched the episode I noticed a subtle, agreeable nod/gesture/half-smile from Harrelson.

Perhaps the biggest mystery of the show is why anyone would cheat on this...

I caught the subtle grin/nod by Hart in the prison, but i thought the scene with the legal assistant was a little too obvious for those in the office and wouldn't happen in real life.

Atleast we got to see Michelle Monaghan in her underwear.
