I do still think Marty's daughter has something to do with the crimes. I was just referring to the ones here that are expecting very minute details to be closed up.

What about the broken tailight?
Did the tiar ever come down from the tree?
Did Marty return the cell phone he bought after he broke things off with whoar?
How did Maggie find the bar Rust is working at?

I think that's why a lot of you are thinking that there is lot to wrap up when really it's only a few main items/storylines.

This. He must have really lost his mojo. I was sad for him.

I am in the camp, however, that does not believe that the oldest Hart daughter's role is done. I think it will be revealed, possibly after they resolve the case and are reviewing crime scene evidence (like a big bunch of pictures / videos at the lawnmower's house) that she witnessed some stuff as a child. It will send Marty over the edge in some way, maybe prompt his suicide to atone for his sin of inattention.

Don't know whether it's suicide or a slide into insanity, which ties back to the original The King in Yellow references.

From an article published a couple of weeks ago:

quote:
True Detective has dropped several potentially meaningful references to The King in Yellow, a book of short stories organized around a fictional play of the same name. The play is only excerpted in brief in the book, but it is described as being a trigger for insanity, with a standard first act that leads into a second act that unhinges viewers into psychosis. Despite everyone in the world of the book knowing that reading or watching The King in Yellow will make you go crazy, the characters keep giving in to temptation and curiosity, unable to resist the pull of finding out what the second act will hold.

I'm 90% sure that if the "King in Yellow" were a real play that a good majority of this thread would watch it... me included.

I too, don't want this show to end. This has been the best show I have watched in a while (and I'm a pretty avid TV show watcher). I am hoping that season two will be at least half as good as this season, because I think Nic Pizzolatto has hit a grand slam with this show. I can't imagine the second season being as good as this one. And to think, this is this guys first show! Has there been any other writer who produced such a great show on their first try? Also, my intense hatred for all things Matthew McConaughey has kind of flipped. I actually like the guy now. He doesn't seem as much of a tool as he did when he was running around the tu sidelines at football games.

At least there will be March Madness to occupy the gap between True Detective and GOT.

Off topic, but the "Cities in Dust" cover for the lengthy GOT trailer preceding each TD episode is perfect.

Watched all 6 prior episodes on HBO Go this week and episode 7 last night live. Best show I've seen in years1 Disliked MM before but his character knocks it out of the park.

This is the only thing about Maggie's involvement that stood out to me from the last episode. I got the feeling the big house during Marty's visit was just to show us how much better her life is versus Marty's since the divorce.

More than likely it's nothing important and she just asked around for the place, but the show has been too well done to just gloss over the fact that she showed up there, alone, after meeting with Marty, and allegedly not having spoken to Rust for 10 years, because she has a keen sense of direction.

I like AgLaw's take on the prior page...I think Cohle's fate is that he's stuck in the flat circle. He would welcome the escape of death at the end of the hunt for Carcosa and the Yellow King, but he's not going to get what he wants. Some way he will be forced to continue.

on the other hand, I think Marty is seeking penance and this last hurrah will sadly give it to him

Alternative theory that I've heard is that Marty makes it out alive and tries to piece his life back together with his family. In the final scene Marty goes to one of his daughter's art shows looking to buy a painting. As he looks around he notices something familiar about each painting. Then finally his eyes come to rest on a painting of a woman with antlers on her head...fade to black.

Reddit thread about how Hart's daughter is not a factor.

I saw that, and nothing he says are significant points against the theory, even the not going to a Tuttle school (given that we already know one person relatively close to Marty was involved), and I really don't understand how taking her medications is evidence against the theory. Also, bipolar disorder is not associated inappropriate knowledge of sexual acts at a young age...sexual abuse is, however. I'm not sure how anyone could explain away the amount of hints that Nic P has given other than he was just trying to trick us, which he says he is not.

Actually, that thread offers more evidence to support the theory. I had never noticed that the large mural at the hospital where the girl victim is kept is reproduced in a framed picture on the wall in Marty's bedroom.

While I agree that most of the outlandish theories won't come to pass I don't think there is anything wrong with speculating on them. Some very minor points have come back to be relevant.

I also don't think the writers put a lot out there unintentionally. I also don't necessarily think everything that was supposedly "resolved" is done either. No doubt many things will have to be left out simply because there is only 1 hour of the show left but it could go a lot of different directions at this point.

I also agree it would be a major letdown if the new State cops took over the case, they just aren't compelling actors by comparison. I do like the theory that they stumble on a scene where everything has been resolved, I also could see Rust getting framed in the end with all the evidence in his storage facility.

Also, Marty ended up being wrong when he stated this. Probably a poor choice at a rebuttal.

Rust has the pictures and video from Tuttle's safe when he broke in back in 2010. I am unsure what Rust's plan is for solving the case since that "evidence" cannot be used in court against Tuttle since it was wrongfully seized. Maybe him going rogue and gathering that "evidence" is showing he is willing to take justice into his own hands. Similar to what Marty did to Ledoux...

Either way it is great he got the evidence, just not sure how it can be used unless it leads to additional evidence that can be collected legally without the corrupt PD getting involved..... Lots of loose ends.

I don't think Rust is looking for Court justice anymore.

As others said, don't think they're looking to resolve this in court, but I they were there is nothing that would prevent that evidence from being admissible. Cohle was not working as or for law enforcement when he stole that evidence, not to mention Tuttle isn't the one who the evidence would be used against, anyways.

Don't think it can be considered illegal search and seizure unless you are law enforcement (i.e. police, FBI, etc.) or working as an agent for one of those organizations at their request. I could be wrong, but him working completely on his own with no instruction from law enforcement and after he had left the force 8 years prior I think would still make any evidence admissible.

I interpreted it as intent to tie it off by ending his life. Especially when he already said the only reason he hasn't killed himself already is he lacked the courage.

But who knows? I certainly wouldn't be surprise if suicide is Not what he meant by that.

Bunk -
It seems crazy to think Marty was involved now, knowing he got to Childress and was working the case now on Rust's behalf but there he is loading his gun and throughout the series he keeps telling Rust how far off base he is, laughing off various theories, shooting the prime suspect.
I know, this show has been messin with my mind!

There is a 0% chance Marty is involved. He was taking a gun for protection. He had every right to believe that Rust was crazy and he had no idea what he was walking in to.

Im glad we had 4 pages on the tail light since that was of HUGE significance

It would seem to me that the only way for Rust to close the loop is to solve the case and die even if it only means that he gets his answers to what has been going on.
