I pretty much thought it wouldn't happen but when they pulled up on that house and showed scarface in the window, the cameras isolated rust for a good while he looked around. At that point I was expecting a bullet to go ripping through his head. I was almost certain it wouldn't happen, but at that moment I thought it would. That's what makes this show so great, along with the good writing.

What I hoped for was a glimpse of something as disturbing...and unanswerable...as the overarching plot seemed to hint at it.
got the disturbing part from freak show's half sister sitting on his lap asking him to "make flowers" on her.

I liked it. I could be picky if I wanted, but that wouldn't be fair.

Question - was anyone else surprised when Remus/Errol said "No" to Rust and took off running like that?

The turning point where I knew that Errol was smarter than I (the audience) was led to believe was when he talked to his half sister in a different accent. That's when I knew he was more than just a "slow" crazy man. He actually was capable of planning this all out and hiding in plain sight for 20 years.

Looking forward to watching again with captioning. I didn't know what LMM was saying as Cohle was searching the tunnels. Very echo-y.

I watched it on CC. It was weird/creepy/awesome. It's worth going back and watching that to see what he says.

For those saying "it wasn't creepy enough", you and I must have watched it with different mindsets. I woke up early this morning to watch it, I was in a dark room watching it on my iPad......and that was one of the creepiest hours of TV I've ever seen. All of the scenes with Errol in them were tense, almost breath holding scenes.

It was great!!!

Great series, great ending.

What do you guys make of Childress & Ledeaux both calling Cohle "priest"?

IMO this season of TD ended with two ideas:

- there is light and there is dark and there is a struggle between those forces from time immemorial

- the universe itself is a mystery, and we will never understand it fully. and that lack of understanding is the gnawing doubt upon which our human experience is founded.

those are uncomfortable (and IMO non-PC) ideas. definitely less comfortable than Cohle's earlier nihilism. and i can see why people aren't satisfied with that as the closing message, given the overall arc of this season.

Stolen from Twitter:

The way True Detective should have ended:

Rust and Marty walk out of hospital, look at each other
Marty: We ARE...the True Detectives
Marty and Rust high five, grasp hands
Freeze Frame
Cue Theme Music

Great, great ending to one of the best shows ever made. The chase through the creepy Carcosa world was legendary. Anyone wishing for closure / resolution of the whole story missed the point. Marty brought it home when Rust said they didn't get all the Tuttles by saying they got THEIR guy. It was all they could do - solve their case - Dora Lange.

One slight criticism - the idea of the sniper keeping tabs on someone was (SPOILER ALERT)

straight from Breaking Bad's finale.

Anyone else keep thinking that Hart or Cohle, during their chase of Errol, would come across that boy (or the boys body) during their chase through the temple/castle thing?

I thought that too until the bar owner who never speaks started shooting up the car. Cohle wasn't bluffing.

I loved the ending. I don't really have a problem with some of the loose ends/unanswered questions...it's too cliche for a series with this power and depth to tie everything up in a nice little bow.

That being said, I am still very intrigued with what Marty's daughter's troubles were supposed to mean, if anything. It seemed like that had a clear path to develop or contribute to the main story line, but kind of just fell off the map.

I have no problem putting this one series in the same sentence with The Wire, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, etc. The fact that 8 episodes has captured us like those other series' has is truly remarkable.

That was my thought exactly. Some production/set designer needs a shelf full of Emmys STAT!

Great ending! McConaughey knocking it out of he park with that finale scene. Jesus! I have three kids and the thought of losing one is without a doubt the worst though I could ever have

8 episodes of GREAT tv.

From those nuggets of season 2 I am ALL IN as well!

If you track the name Childress, you realize Sheriff Childress was the sheriff when Marie Fontenot disappeared, an Officer Childress was attending to Guy Francis in 2002 when he committed suicide. The conspiracies that I've researched and encountered, they seem to happen very ad hoc: they become conspiracies when it's necessary to have a conspiracy. I think it would have rang false to have Hart and Cohle suddenly clean up 50 years of the culture history that led to Errol Childress, or to get all the men in that video. It's important to me, I think, that Cohle says, "We didn't get em all, Marty," and Marty says, "We ain't going to. This isn't that kind of world." This isn't the kind of world where you mop up everything. We discharged our duty, but of course there are levels and wheels and historical contexts to what happened that we'll never be able to touch.

A guy like Rust Cohle just can't let that stuff go. That's why he needed to die. You think he can just live life, grilling hot dogs and burgers, not researching the Carcosa business further? That's why this finale was a big disappointment to me. It betrays the character we came to understand and love.

But it emphasizes the point of time is a flat circle. In the end they're back where they started. Remember when after talking to the old black lady that she was wrong about one thing, that death was the most painful thing. Death is the easy way out for Rust and is for the show.

One thing I didn't notice till last night was when they're driving in their car the reflections of the window can be seen on their faces just like the scenes in the opening credits. Means nothing but thought it was cool.

This reminded me off the famous bigfoot footage(as did the scene with Reggie in a gas mask and tighty whighties). This big mysterious man creature that he's been searching for for years trudging through the forest.

Don't understand some of the light criticism I've heard on here. If you didn't appreciate the finale, you never really immersed yourself into the series. I could go on about why (multiple points to be made) but I'll hear out some of the critique and get back here soon. I have my base points though.

I binge watched so that may be why, but over 8 episodes while I thought the relationship between Harrelson/McConaughey was well done, I didn't view it as some epic TV duo.

Mind you the "duos" that I look back on that I felt much more for were hashed out over numerous seasons, but that doesn't change the feeling.

As far as this episode specifically... Ignoring that two ex-cops who had worked podunk Louisiana get all the way to the killer's domain and then realize they have cell phones that don't work:

Erroll's character -- like many of the others -- wasn't fleshed out at all. We knew absolutely nothing about this guy, then in 10 minute were bombarded with his lifestyle to try and give us an idea. Again I know the show was about the two detectives, but simply didn't think that part of the show was strong enough to write every other character in the show (minus maybe the wife) so flimsy, and for the actual case to just really skim the surface.

Again, I believed to be well above average show, but I've got a number of shows that I would put well before it in my all-time list. As for character relationships? Just recently Walt and Jessie played off of each other much better. Yes, we're talking 6 seasons (?) compared to 8 episodes, but that doesn't change the evaluation since we're not getting anymore with these two.

To be fair, my opinion may change greatly depending on what is done with Season 2 and on. I didn't think The Wire was that great after 7-8 episodes, or even a full season -- it was something that needed to be completed before you can look back and really appreciate it as a whole.

I know the series didn't end up with everyone being caught, they got Errol (their man) at the end. But didn't they mail out the videos and all of their investigation out to media outlets and such? Could be assumed that they got the man with the scars, but the info on the Tuttle's and Childress' is now out there, because of them.

I didn't take the finale in anyway to make me think Rust was going to be a happy person grilling hot dogs. He is always going to be tortured, but at least found some peace. He didn't beat the demons of the world, but he subdued HIS demon. Neither of them will ever just be hot dog grilling neighbors with no problems though. They will never be the same or forget.

Jim: A True Detective sees a case out to the end. This case isn't finished. Rust isn't dead. Why isn't Season 2 about Rust finishing the case? That's why he should have died.
