I'd much rather have icy and snow than wild fire season in the winter....

It's awful to see. Used to be stationed at 29 Palms and then contractor in SoCal afterwards and it truly is a seasonal thing. It's one of those things you really have to see in person to truly grasp how powerful and devastating these fires can be.

Yeah yeah, dumb commiefornians have it coming and all that rhetoric this board thrives on. Still f'ing sucks to see so many homes and life works being swept away in minutes.

ETA: We have our own issues here in Texas too of course. Not discounting those. Last year's Panhandle fires...ugh. And I swear Bastrop is on fire more often than not.

Shouldn't living in that area be considered basically like living in a flood plain?

I have talked to a forestry guy that says the Westlake area of Austin in ripe for a devastating fire if the conditions were right.

Really agree with the bolded above.

Why that area in particular? Is tree density the main factor?

My basic take away was tree density, proximity of trees to homes, and the "canyons" that many of the neighborhoods are built in.

We joke about Cali falling into the ocean, and it does have a bunch of dipsh**ts running and residing in that state, but regardless, I hate to see this. The most beautiful state imo...and TONS of good friendly people there out that we often ignore in discussion.

praying for them.

The thing that p*sses me off though, is that so many have been brainwashed into thinking this is a "climate change" thing...and it will just further reinforce false and dangerous narratives in the minds of millions of wackjobs.

Also there used to be 1 road out of most of the area. Now there's a second one, but Lake Austin sort of hems a big area in and the terrain is hilly and full of flammable brush and trees if it is very dry.

Or maybe it's just the media WAY overplaying the significance of the impact of a fire.

Sorry for the false alarm folks.

I saw the James Woods post and thought it was worse than it is......20 acres FFS.

If those winds keep up, it's still pretty valid. It is crazy to see how fast a fire can spread. 2 to 20 to 2000 to 20000+ can happen VERY quickly if response is not immediate and overwhelming in those kinds of conditions. Even then it still may happen.

One of the biggest issues with winds like this is not just the speed of spread but how far a far can jump firebreaks.

They are going to have 100mph winds and this isn't even 1% contained.

Little early to be saying false alarm.

And those homes are super expensive. $6MM for a nice 4,200 SF home on a .25 acre lot that would probably cost $2-2.5MM in Westlake Austin...

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/16647-Bienveneda-Pl-Pacific-Palisades-CA-90272/20544397_zpid/

LOTS of homes in the $10-20MM range in that vicinity.

Not sure of the conditions this year but I remember the Santa Ana winds while I was there. Sustained like 65+ with gusts up to like 90mph in the hills. With temperatures still being 90+ degrees and bone dry. It was like standing in front of an angry blast furnace/wind tunnel abomination. Pretty much a hell on earth.

If there is one thing I want to see from this new administration is an overhaul to the federal wildland firefighting salary and benefits packages. They get paid absolute dog**** wages for arguably the toughest job in the world. I was a infantryman drafted into digging firebreaks one year and it damn near broke me. It is an absolute insult how little they get paid. Just looked it up again, entry level positions is still approx. $27K. State pay is little better.

Probably started by homeless living in the canyons.

One year I worked in the EOC in San Diego during the '07 fires. They can move 40-50mph and faster if driven up a hillside. This was before all social media, waze etc...trying to close roads and get info out so people didn't roast alive in the vehicles was scary.

I thought I was hearing the fires again in the middle of Sunday night here in Steiner. Sooo windy and dry. I slept with one eye open for hours, figuring out what I grab first...again.

Holy crap...TBH, I can kind of sympathize with them. That would be terrifying and would be difficult not to panic...especially as you see others in front of you leaving and fleeing on foot. A lot of those people probably also influenced by what we saw in Lahaina...how quick the unthinkable happened. It's a VERY bad situation now, impacting relief efforts, but not sure I can blame them.

My slice of California was 6950 sq. ft. ~ 1/6th of an acre.

Having been through a few of these wildfires, I can confirm that they can get out of control in a hurry.

One of the scariest experiences of my life was seeing the white smoke from a fire in Griffith Park as I was in Baldwin Hills headed home, northbound on La Brea. Knowing that my kids were 40 minutes away (over the hill) and the fire was between us.

By the time I got to Barham, it was a fully raging fire.

That night, watching that fire burn within a mile of my house was pretty scary.

Although most of this is preventable, it is frightening as it's happening.
