Sounds like the historical building is the Getty Museum.
Didn't the Getty do something smart a few years back and employ ranchers and hundreds of goats to eat all the surrounding vegetation to create a buffer around it?

I know they did this in the past, and am I just too dense to think that this could be done at scale throughout the canyons at MINIMAL cost? These fires are fueled by dense underbrush that hundreds or thousand of goats could beat back if done consistently.
That's the fight. Nature preservationists feel removal of surrounding vegetation can potentially harm spotted owl or some rare ground gray squirrels...

After a google search, I now understand the problem in LA. SMH

Wondering why they don't pump ocean water for their fire hydrants and pumper trucks. Would need pumps and hoses

Why in the heck would a US city mayor need to be at some African countries presidential inauguration?

I feel for these folks but it's like living in Florida on the coast and then deciding you don't want people like DeSantis and then wondering why everything is a disaster after a hurricane. They voted for this overwhelmingly, like +30-50 Dem. They wanted the fire chief to care more about DEI than fighting fires. They wanted to stop spending on the infrastructure necessary to be prepared for the natural disasters that are going to occur in their geography. The same things that make it beautiful there are what make it so vulnerable. This isn't climate change, this is geography. If you don't plan for protecting against disasters they are going to come hard at you until you decide to start planning for them.

Hopefully some of them wake up and it definitely sucks for people to lose their homes and businesses. There is also a minority of folks there that are basically trapped by all the liberals and it sucks for them too. Hopefully they start to figure it out and change, it can happen if they choose to. If not this will just continue to be an ongoing problem.

UCLA is open for classes and regular operations today, Wednesday, Jan. 8. The fires in the Los Angeles region do not pose an immediate danger to the campus, and at present, air quality levels in Westwood remain within normal levels. Geffen Academy, UCLA Lab School and our Early Care and Education Programs are open; UCLA Extension also remains open.
We are continuing to closely monitor the impact of fires in the region and are actively coordinating with the Los Angeles Fire Department and other municipal partners. We also have operational teams on standby should anything require immediate attention on campus.

Fire fighters aren't fighting this fire. The conditions are so bad there is no way they can be fought now that its in the suburbs. You cannot create fire breaks, which would also be useless due to the wind speeds. Fire can move at 50mph and the fuel is now homes.

All they can do is get people out of the way and protect hospitals, refineries and toxic dumps to avoid making things even worse. 100% out of control and they don't have access to the tools they need due to high winds over night.

Seems as through they are using freeways as fire breaks. The 210 is keeping Sylmar from the Hurst fire. If it jumps the freeway, look out.

Trade Mission! Promoting LA! Recruiting!
Former Houston mayor Sly Turner did this for many years. Africa, Cuba, Japan, China, Brazil, Europe, etc. One international trip after another until term limits recently ended his terms as mayor. Taxpayer funded international trips with his city staff.

It's not a smirk.

It's a small smile saying it's going to be ok. Maybe because I've lived in CA for about 2 decades and have lived through wild fires every year. If it's a smirk then because I know what's coming, doubling of my home owners insurance. And I'm back in CA for 3 weeks with one of the primary objectives of fireproofing my property.

Wild fire is actually a natural part of CA climate. Some plants require it to grow. Here's an interactive map that shows historical fires of CA. And the area on fire now actually gets fire a lot. I do hope everyone comes out safe and no one gets hurt.

Fire is destructive. But I've seen the nature recover from it. Right in front of my eyes. Like I said, the CARR fire in 2018 came within 1.5 miles of my house. It devastated our area. But 7 years later, we can hardly tell here was fire in many places.

I'm hoping the fire goes out with minimal destruction.

Thanks for sharing that map. Pretty interesting.

Yeah, I don't get it. Conservatives choose to stay there despite the liberal, woke incompetence in their government. James Woods is about to lose his house. He's a very smart, hardcore conservative. He could have easily sold his house to an insane lefty and moved away long ago. SMH.

Perhaps they have the financial ability to be able to get more out of living there than the political things they hate?

So a big supplier of ours in Sylmar is closed due to the Hurst fire being about 1.5 miles north of their plant.

Manager there told me the one good thing about this fire is all the people living in their RVs along the street in front of their plant have found away to get them running and gone someplace else.

Yeah, I saw a vid of miles of RVs camped along the side of a highway, not in an RV park. Are people living in those things as a permanent resident on the roadside?
Sadly, those are permanent residences.
I'm very surprised that any of them are able to move under their own power.

We should focus on the positives. They built a high speed rail bridge over a viaduct.

And they put in place a cohesive, systematic plan to map out the race of every employee back in 2021:

And they spent over $23 billion on illegal alien benefits in 2023 alone.

I'll give you three reasons:
1 - the weather is great
2 - all the people they know and work with are there
3 - it's really difficult to let go of the nostalgia factor of what LA once was

A fourth reason is that they can afford it.

If your house is paid off, the rest of the costs are incrementally higher than anywhere else but if you think about some place like Texas vs. California, with Prop 13, a homeowner who has been in their house for 20 years isn't getting jacked every year on property taxes like we are in Texas.

I bailed out in August 2023. I could have moved out sooner but it is hard to let go of the optimism that you had when you moved "out here" and especially if you "made it".

When you start out in LA, you most likely can't afford it. Once you've clawed your way to the top, you don't want to let go of that accomplishment.

I will echo,

Yes, I've been doing chores around the house up north state CA, and it is beautiful and conservative here.

But we spent the weekend with 10 of our buddies in a golf outing in Monterey - pebble beach (Poppy) and spent a day in Carmel by the Sea (Most unique and best city in the USA imo). There's nothing like it.

Back in July during Hurricane Beryl, one of my neighbors moved her car into the garage to protect it from the storm.

After the storm knocked down her fence and a tree, her car was trapped in the garage. Kind of funny.
