I've yet to see any of the five DC10 air tankers that California has or had up until 2022 for sure. It can carry up to 12,000 gallons of fire ******ant in a belly-mounted tank. The DC-10's advantages in capacity and dispersion is second to none. It can carry three times the ******ant of other large air tankers, allowing crews to triple their work at the same cost. All three tanks can be filled simultaneously on the ground in eight minutes. The ******ant is gravity-fed out of the tanks, and the entire load can be dumped in eight seconds, although the actual drop rate is computer controlled by the flight crew in order to produce the desired ******ant spread over the fire lines. The aircraft is capable of applying a line of ******ant 300 feet wide by 1 mile long. Where are these planes? I've seen the smaller planes but not the DC10s
The winds have probably been too high.

One day I saw a 747 tanker dropping its payload in the hills above Burbank so I know there's at least 1 747 out there too.

Also, there is at least 1 Chinook helicopter but we haven't seen pictures of that one either. I'm guessing due to high winds.

Humans build homes in a natural fire region they are going to burn down.
Humans build homes in a flood area they are going to flood.
Humans build homes on the coast prone to hurricanes and they are going to get damaged or destroyed by hurricanes.
Humans build homes in Tornado ally and they are going to get hit by tornadoes.
Humans will then blame each other.

No. The 747 was uneconomical and converted back to a cargo freighter. It was actually done in SA, and I immediately recognized it when I saw it driving past the airport one morning.

Here's the calfire fleet.
https://www.calfirepilots.com/fleet
One of the aircraft they use are some S2s from the 50's/ 60's; Was surprised the first time I saw one. OV10s also, for command / control.

There are also contract aircraft.

There is a CA Air National Guard squadron with C130Js that can be used specifically for dropping ******ant.
Others can also be equipped...

edit to add: texags blocked the fire r****dant word. Funny, but sad.

The J model can take a hell of a side slip. Any J drivers here? I can't remember the actual number.

I was on fuselage design on the J model and I remember the vertical having some hellacious max yaw loads.

I don't get this. Am I supposed to believe that someone who has 22 years on the job and rose through the ranks starting as a Firefighter, then Paramedic, Engineer, Fire Inspector, Captain I, Captain II, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, Chief Deputy, and now Fire Chief is not qualified for the job because they're gay?

If I need the fire department, I'm not standing out front checking sexual orientation before I let them get to work.
The proof is in the pudding, wouldn't you say?

I believe they cannot be used due to the high winds. Some places have had 40mph winds with, IIRC, gusts up to 80mph. At high altitude that's probably not as much of an issue, but at low altitude and going slow to do a drop over a fire, it's too much.

Yet you think it's OK for them to use this criteria as part of the hiring process in the first place?
You don't do 22+ years in the fire department without being able to do the job. You don't get promoted up through the ranks without recommendations of your peers and supervisors

I am wondering if it can handle the near-hurricane force winds/gusts they have been experiencing?
Saw video of a C130 yesterday.
Maybe we'll see them today?

Flying in windy weather, about 200m over a mountain (adds turbulence) . And the mountain is on fire.
I guarantee there are no DEI pilots flying those things.
Nope, white, black, brown, whatever...can rest assured they earned it.

Holy crap, that is jaw dropping. I mentioned this yesterday, but imagine being one of the very few remaining homes who made it unscathed in an area like that. Even if there was ZERO damage...would you even want to live there anymore? I can't think of a more depressing hellscape to have to live in. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of those remaining homes are $15-20+ Million. What could you even sell for in the coming years...there will be no new homes or luch vegetation for YEARS, if at all.

Just awful...and I am sure it is even more disturbing at the ground level. Can't imagine.

It's an indication that fire crews are unable to establish a control line which will contain the fire (fire gets to the control line, but the line is designed/cut so as to not allow the fire to spread beyond that perimeter)…

In other words, they are simply unable to set up any control line perimeters at this time that the fire can burn up to, but not beyond…
