Holy crap...TBH, I can kind of sympathize with them. That would be terrifying and would be difficult not to panic...especially as you see others in front of you leaving and fleeing on foot. A lot of those people probably also influenced by what we saw in Lahaina...how quick the unthinkable happened. It's a VERY bad situation now, impacting relief efforts, but not sure I can blame them.

Its a worse situation that gridlock for a hurricane. Fire moves too fast.

Trump gonna rename those the Sam Houston winds.

With sustained winds around 40mph they can't use aerial resources.

Crazy this is getting no coverage. 2nd largest media market and the 24 hour cable news channels are talking about what Trump said instead of live breaking news which should be their specialty.

Sorry for the false alarm folks.

I saw the James Woods post and thought it was worse than it is......20 acres FFS.

Delete thread, ban user.

1,300+ acres now and 10,000+ homes threatened. No containment.

Does Weather Channel cover wildfires? Seems like a new revenue stream for them if not.

Got off the phone with co-worker about 2 hours ago. She was 18 miles from this. Scary as hell.

in that area, 20 acres is a lot of homes.

Son is on the other side of the hill at ucla. Campus emergency dept already contacted parents. Fortunately son is well trained living in Northern Cal fire region. Carr fire that burned thousands of acres some years ago cane within 2 miles of my house.

For the past 2 weeks, I've been clearing brush and grass to create fire defenensible space around the property.

May get to the 405? It's going to burn anything down wind. Fire department isn't going to stop jack.

Not their fault. Just too big a fire with winds to support it.

Listening to the scanner, they aren't even trying to stop the fire. They are focusing on saving lives.

Quite a few firefighters are radioing in saying they are out of water and need to be redeployed to another team where they can actually do something.

Sadly, a lot of them sound defeated.

Kamala and Doug's home is in Brentwood. If fire reaches their home, truly a bad week for her and it is only Tuesday.

Fire impacting Big Rock and moving towards Malibu.

Losing multiple structures along the PCH.

And the max winds haven't hit yet.

The scanner is depressing. Lots of reports of being out of water and dry hydrants. Homes on PCH burned. When the sun comes up tomorrow it's going to be wild

This many fires in different locations in one day? Smells like could be arson to me.

Possibly, but embers are traveling up to 1 mile in the wind

Surprised there isn't more tbh. This is a massive urban area with normal fire events every day. They just get out of hand now because of the winds and lack of units to respond.

Of course arson absolutely could be a thing and very well may be. I was there for the '07 fire outbreaks and I think like half of those ended up being arson or accidental idiots. There were like 20 something all told IIRC

I didn't say all of them were arson. That one or more could be.

It's awful to see. Used to be stationed at 29 Palms and then contractor in SoCal afterwards and it truly is a seasonal thing. It's one of those things you really have to see in person to truly grasp how powerful and devastating these fires can be.

Yeah yeah, dumb commiefornians have it coming and all that rhetoric this board thrives on. Still f'ing sucks to see so many homes and life works being swept away in minutes.

ETA: We have our own issues here in Texas too of course. Not discounting those. Last year's Panhandle fires...ugh. And I swear Bastrop is on fire more often than not.
I have talked to a forestry guy that says the Westlake area of Austin in ripe for a devastating fire if the conditions were right.

Really agree with the bolded above.

Why that area in particular? Is tree density the main factor?

Can't cut down cedar cause birds nesting trees.

Eradicating cedar would do wonders for the hill country. It would get rid of a fuel source for fire and it would help with water levels in the creeks and streams.
