He does livestream updates whenever there's a fire going on. Covers fire behavior, atmospherics and politics involved with CA wildfires. He mentioned this fire was going to go on for awhile.

I think the politics is going to get ugly here. Trump vs Newsome on the recovery. This is mostly affluent part of SoCal so a bunch of millionaires possibly receiving federal aid might look bad.

Not sure of the conditions this year but I remember the Santa Ana winds while I was there. Sustained like 65+ with gusts up to like 90mph in the hills. With temperatures still being 90+ degrees and bone dry. It was like standing in front of an angry blast furnace/wind tunnel abomination. Pretty much a hell on earth.

If there is one thing I want to see from this new administration is an overhaul to the federal wildland firefighting salary and benefits packages. They get paid absolute dog**** wages for arguably the toughest job in the world. I was a infantryman drafted into digging firebreaks one year and it damn near broke me. It is an absolute insult how little they get paid. Just looked it up again, entry level positions is still approx. $27K. State pay is little better.
They end up making a good salary because so much overtime. GS4s, but many probably make and extra $30k in OT over the fire season. That's why many do seasonal and then take the rest of the year off. Definitely a hard way to make a buck and I agree they should pay more.

Calfire is paying much better than the feds.

I don't understand why every national guardsman out west, and in Texas, isn't also a wildland firefighter.

The other issue is USFS management practices suck. Calfire is better because they're driven by protecting lumber company land (politics and $).
