Was watching with the wife. When THE SCENE started, I was staring at the screen, completely mesmerized. I looked over and happened to notice that the wife was smirking. My remark in my best nonplussed nonchalance:

quote:Man. The hairpiece they put on Woody Harrelson is amazing.

The wife....was not fooled.

Did anyone else notice the giant owl in the rafters when they walked into the church ruins at the end?

Saw that too and wondered why it wasn't mentioned by Hart or Cohle.

Oh, and I think I blacked out for a bit after seeing Alexandra Daddario nude for the first time.

Seriously, it's the first thing I was drawn to in that scene. Figured it was there for a reason.

Not that it's related to the owl in the rafters but I noticed I the credits that one of the production companies had Owl in the name.

So is the whole story about the case records/archives being destroyed by Hurricane Katrina a ruse to get them to come in and talk without an attorney?

I think the owl way there to show that the church has been vacant awhile. So long that animals are living there. And that the south is full of creatures at every turn.
I think it was a prop piece.

I think there's something to that. At the very least we've already seen Rust beat the **** out of some rednecks just to get an address. It might be they are actually IA. Or possibly, as crazy as Rust sounds sometimes, maybe they suspect him of falling off the deep end and committing some actual crimes himself.

Although I think they blame the loss of records on Rita, rather than Katrina.

Most likely, the records loss is a ruse to get them in there, but they are really looking for Rust's insight into the case, because he's sort of brilliant in a deviant way. Notice how they keep asking Hart about Cohle's process. So maybe they intend to piggy-back off of his ideas and research to find their current killer.

I love that it's left as a mystery though.

As for the owl, I totally missed that! So I'll need to go back and check it out. I could also see it being an allusion to paganism. The owl in Norse and Greek mythology is used to denote death and in Celtish lore it represents the "crone" aka witches.

I thought the were asking about Rust's process to see if he could've been stringing Cohle along. At the end of the first episode when MM yelled out "you're asking the wrong ****ing questions" or something along that line it made it seem as though he was aware they were accusing him.

I took the "Start asking the right questions" comment the same way. Like he was preemptively telling them he agreed the original case wasn't solved. After the second episode where the chief gave them to the end of the month, and the allusion to the original murder not being correctly solved I am wondering if the case was "solved" by the task force and not MM and WH.

I'd also like to add that the music has been stellar in this series so far. The Black Angels song to close out the pilot was a masterstroke.

I agree that I don't think the case was solved by Cohle and Hart, and I think that is why Cohle told the detectives to start asking the right questions. I want to know what Cohle is up to now? I mean, he seems like the kind of character that wouldn't quit on this investigation. Do you think he has been carrying on the investigation by himself this whole time? Could Hart and him still be working it "off the books". We heard that Hart has a security business now, and we know that Cohle was a deep cover narco guy, do you think they have still been trying to find the killer? Or am I just going off on a tangent? Probably the latter.

Oh, and the owl was pretty cool in the church. I saw in the "making of" special for True Detective that the film crew had to use birds of prey to keep the mockingbirds out of the shot because they were too loud. I wonder if that owl just happened to get in the shot and they left it there. This is a great show. I can't wait for Sunday.

Yep SLF11, that song is great. My wife and I had to Shazam it, because we thought it was great. I hadn't heard of the band before, but I might just have to add them to my spotify account to hear some more.

The owl in the church could be a reference to witchcraft. In Mexico some people believe that witches(brujas) take the form of owls(lechuzas).

I think they think Cohle is the killer.

And I think Cohle is going to bang Hart's wife before it is all said and done.

Haven't read the rest of the thread, I apologize if this has been discussed already.

Bendover, I think you may be on to something with Cohle and Hart's wife. That's probably what caused the fallout in 2002. One thing I noticed though, in the scene where Hart tells the two new detectives that he hasn't seen Cohle in ten years, the two detectives kind of have this look/exchange that seemed to say that they didn't believe him. Did anyone else catch that?

I don't think that Cohle is the killer (that just seems too easy of a conclusion), but I do think that he is on the new detectives radar as a person of interest. Man, I wish this was on Netflix so I could binge watch the whole season.

It's incredibly obvious after the first episode that Rust is one of their suspects for the recent ritualistic murder.

He definitely bangs Woody's wife. Woody explained that Kohl had the best ability to spot a weakness. Woody's relationship with his wife is a weakness

They think they solved the case in 95 and put someone away. A new, similar murder happened recently in Lake Charles and it appears to have reopened the case. Either got the wrong guy or there was more than one.

So...really good episode tonight. A lot of plot advancement.

This is one of those mutli-layered mystery dramas that even though the non-murder mystery isn't clear, we all know what is eventually going to happen with the subplots, it's still exciting to watch them as they happen.

I'm smitten by Alexis. Ugh.

I also just finished reading the original draft of the pilot (I'm currently writing an autopsy scene and wanted to see how they did theirs, ended up reading the whole thing). A few interesting tidbits...

- The script is before casting, and basically the exact same, except the original draft took place in Arkansas. And McConaughey's character was from Louisiana. My guess is they got some pretty big tax breaks to shoot in Louisiana and that's why they changed locations. Also with McConaughey himself being from Texas.

- The bulk of the story - the flashbacks - were originally set in '90 as opposed to '95. Present day was 2010 as opposed to 2012. Curious why they changed the flashback date that much.
..

Hurricanes seem to offer a reference point in time and significant events follow them. Records were destroyed by Rita and tonight they find the girl from a town wiped out by Andrew. Isaac was the big one in 2012 for Louisiana as well. Just interesting. Probably nothing.

Really like that it's only an 8 episode arc, so there should be closure rather than cliff hangers leading to a next season.

heisatouchdown

So Ledoux had a "fire fight" with Woody and MM. Also, Woody is definitely divorced in the recent interviews as you can see there's no band on his left hand.

Also, I liked to imagine that he told those two black detectives all the awkward details of him having sex with his wife in that flashback.

For me, for whatever reason, this series went from really, really good to potential all-timer tonight. Felt like this was the episode it truly started coming into its own. Three hours in, and it genuinely plays like a Fincher-esque classic told in eight parts. And I can't get enough of it.

Also, that final shot was just phenomenal. It had to be a nod to the iconic Bigfoot footage/pic from the '60s, which slows and freezes in almost the same manner every time it's shown. Rust & Marty finally zeroing-in on an elusive Bigfoot of their own...

Wow, incredible episode. I love how they build up the introduction of certain characters/scenes by talking about it first. Woody and MM talking about Ladeouz, then showing him in a Jock strap with a machete and a gas mask - don't think I've ever seen more intimidating, powerful introduction to the bad guy. Maybe the Kurgan from Highlander....

Btw, I said MM would sleep with Woody's wife after ep. 1, pretty sure thats gonna happen.
