Have they told WH about the new murder. I can't recall them saying anything to him about it, they have only been quizzing him on the original case and MM.

Right?

If this is the case how does this affect everybody's ideas of what is to come? Maybe they think WH has something to do with new murder. Maybe new victim is his ex?

Thoughts?

Did anyone notice the out of focus tree-hut craft thing when Ledoux pauses to look around?

Good point. I don't recall the new detectives ever mentioning the new (2012) victim to WH. However, both WH and the detectives have made it clear that they are conducting the interrogation to better understand MM's approach to how he worked the '95 case. That could just be their front into getting the info they need out of WH, but I haven't really gotten that vibe just yet. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if that's what it turns out to be, but I just think that's a little too predictable for a show that has shown so much depth.

Surely WH will be informed of the new vic at some point, but it is interesting that they "cut to the chase" with MM yet are stringing WH along with their interrogation.

Along these same lines, it's become clear that both MM & WH are "bad men". Two quotes by McConaughey come to mind "The world needs bad men to keep other bad men from the door" & the final line of last nights episode, where MM explains many people come to the last moments of their dream (life) and "there is a monster at the end of it". You could interpret that as MM & WH are monsters in their own right.

I'm guessing Woody may have been "dishonorably" discharged or something, that or the new detectives don't think much of him. From what the picture has been painted in the 3 episodes we've seen, Woody doesn't really add much to solving items, he's more of the talker and people person in the partnership. I'm guessing they don't think Woody could contribute if they showed him the new case.

It also speaks to their different personalities. WH believes in procedure and helping out your fellow officers, if someone asks you a question you answer it. The new cops don't need to bait him with beer and an interesting puzzle, he'll volunteer all the information anyway.

MM on the other hand is all about the mystery. He wants to prove how smart he is. He figures out there's a new case on his own and that seems to energize his discussion.

I get the feeling these two new cops are pretty smart. The fact they say very little and just listen tells us they know a lot about MM and WH from the get go.

Can everyone try using the characters names and not MM or WH?
It just seems lazy to me.

^ Agreed.

McConaughey is Rustin "Rust" Cohle. Harrelson is Martin "Marty" Hart.

My vote is for just COHLE and HART from now on.

I think the difference in the interrogations is that Cohle cuts to the chase and asks about a new victim while Hart seems content to just answer questions without speculating (yet). This has been great so far.

I might not have been paying attention or just forgot but what was in the manilla folder that Cohle kept fixating on? Was it a pic of the new victim?

BBRex,

I think the series has shown already that Cohle is a far more intuitive detective than Hart.

This is a board where people express "heartfelt" sympathy with "t&p".

Yes. They show cohle the pic of her at the end of the first episode. Very similar to first found victim but strung up in trees. No way it's hart's wife. He does figure out there's a new case but doesn't link it to lake Charles and hasn't asked too much about it.

What is the current thinking:

a) the show remains this way for all, or at least the majority of the season, where 2012 flashes back to 1995

b) the 1995 stuff is resolved in the next episode or two, and the rest of the series takes place in 2012, pertaining to the recent case

I like the idea of B. But to be honest, what they've done so far has been brilliant, so if it's not option B I'll trust them with where it's going.

We also need to know what happened in 2002 when they seperated as partners and cohle went off the grid till 2010

Could Cohle (and possibly Hart) be undercover (in 2012)? Could he be so entrenched the current detectives have no idea?

I could see both being "discharged" for whatever reason, then re-engaged by the Feds if indeed there is a greater force at work that goes beyond just Ledoux.

I think the task force probably caught a guy and "solved" the murders. Cohle never believed it and lost interest in life and hasn't been doing anything but drinking just like he said. But, now that he sees another killing, it brings him back to life. That's my prediction.

Why would Cohle need to borrow Hart's lawnmower being that he lives in an apartment? Strange...

Random prediction/possible spoiler...

2012 Cohle is paralyzed from the waist down

Reasoning:
1) All interrogation room scenes of him are tight, upper body shots...table is always hiding his lower body (this is not the case with 2012 Hart scenes)

2) Thought it was odd he had the detective go get his booze for him in ep 1

3) I get a strong Lt. Dan type vibe with his present day appearance

Didn't look like current victim was in a tree but hanging down from a wooden bridge. One you would see in Breaux Bridge

Interesting Mad Hatter!?!?

But if that's the case, it would likely blow the whole theory of "they're interviewing him because they think he might have done it".

Pretty sure he stood up briefly bit even if he didn't the whole scene has been of him being interviewed. He doesn't move in hi is chair like someone with a paralysis. And Hart has been sitting the whole time too.

Rogue, Wasn't just referring to you, but either way T&P.

Cohle is not paralyzed. He stands up and pulls out a $5 from his black chain wallet.

What this show needs are some clues embedded into the background, or recurring themes. ex Breaking Bad, LOST. Let the background, props, outfits, add more mystery already to an existing mystery. TA hasn't gotten this into a show in a while.

Btron, you're right. I just looked at Cohle's fist scene on hbogo and you can see his legs briefly.

I wonder if cohle had spent more time going thru the yearbook at the end of the last episode, he would have found the new, real, killer. But the call came in about ledoux and he was the #1 suspect.

Guy at top right looks like Burt before prison messed him up.

So a this point we're supposed to think that the cops believe Cohle lost his mind and copycatted a killer he investigated, right?

FWIW, I don't think Burt is the killer. The preacher and his wife were suspicious to me though.

I think we were supposed think this maybe at the end of the first episode - and certain people still seem to be clinging to it - but the show really hasn't leaned this way in the last couple episodes. I get the feeling the show has moved past this speculation.
