Ha. The title of that thread made me go cross-eyed and I've steered away.

If you want to attack the personal life of a starlet, probably don't pick on one that is actually in what appears to be a strong and financially supported marriage, and that is raising a baby as a family.

And I guess I'm in the minority, but I have never once thought that Cohle is the killer. It just seems way too easy and cliched.

I love this comment. Certainly, making the lead detective on the case turn out to be the serial killer is cliched; there's no doubt about that.

So, it follows logically then that the very best twist the writers can give us is to actually tell a linear story where we suspect Cohle in the beginning and then have that confirmed in the end.

In other words, we've come to expect the twist (here, the trope that the lead detective is actually the serial killer) As a result, the writers play to the expectation and then rip it away in an effort to avoid the cliched twist. But the result is that the method of avoiding the cliched twist has become so cliched itself that the real surprise would be actually confirming the anticipated --and subsequently dismissed and disregarded-- twist.

So basically, the least shocking thing True Detective can do would be to hint at Cohle as the killer and then ultimately reveal that he's innocent and another character is the actual killer. The most shocking thing they could do would be to hint at Cohle as the killer, then reveal Cohle as the killer.

Unless they make Marty the killer. Which would come out of left field.

Haha, 3rd level thinking. Seems like a poker hand. But what if they go 4th level?

The writers know that we know that the trickiest thing they could do would be to make Cohle the killer, so they don't do that and revert back to making someone else the killer?

Are we really sure that Cohle and Marty are two different people? It seemed pretty clear from the getgo that Cohle was a fragment of Marty's fragile psyche.

But it's so simple.

All we have to do is divine from what we know of the writer: is he the sort of writer who would make the killer his own detective or another enemy?

Now, a clever writer would make the killer his own detective, because he would know that only a great fool would suspect someone other than Chole as the serial killer. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose Chole as the serial killer.

But the writer must have known I was not a great fool. He would have counted on it! So I can clearly not choose someone other than Cohle as the serial killer.

Another reason I love this show is the opening credits. Who ever designed this is a true bad ass.

I know a few people at Elastic, the company who did the titles. Same guys who also did the great Game of Thrones titles.

I've googled it a few times with no success, has anybody come across a transcript of Cohle's Monster monologue at the end of episode 3?

I was going to make something up that sounded legit, but then realized I don't have the wherewithal to compete with cohle.

Decided to rewatch the first episode last night. Don't know if anyone else has gone back but I did not realize how much I missed.

For example - there is a line from Cohle about "You want to know how we pulled all those kids out?" "We'll get to that". Something along those lines. Just so many small hints (or diversions).

Also I am really suspicious of the Reverend Tuttle (the Governor's cousin). His line about a war going on just seemed so odd to me.

On to a rewatch of episode 2 tonight...

I struggle with this every night playing my 8 year old son in a RPS tournament, best 4 out of 7. He has some crazy ability to always go one more level of thinking than me. It's uncanny. Dude is an amazing RPS player.

Rock Paper Scissors (mostly editing), A52 (mostly effects) and Elastic (mostly production/TV-ish stuff) are under one roof. All owned by Angus Wall, (Oscar-winning) editor of The Social Network and The Girl with Dragon Tattoo (plus every Fincher film since Fight Club, I think). My writing partner used to work for them, and another really good friend of mine still does. We were actually in their office the day after Angus and his editing partner won the TGWTDT Oscar and got to have some celebratory cake. Really cool company, really cool guys. They've worked on some of my favorite commercials and movies over the last decade or so.

Wow, funny you mention rps. I have 3 sons and my 12-yr-old middle son almost never loses. Doesn't matter who he plays, but he's also somewhat of a genius, smartest kid I've ever known.

The last two episodes have really shown Marty's dark side and as Cohle pointed out, Marty doesn't even acknowledge his evil, so I don't think it would really be that surprising at this point

But I do get the feeling that we're obviously supposed to think it's Cohle, but now it's gotta be the preacher, oh no it's Cohle, no maybe it's Marty? All this misdirection/subtlety is giving me a quarter-chub

Maybe it is Marty. His daughter has gang bangs with her Barbie and draws very graphic pictures. They interviewed cohle first so maybe throughout they all figure out it's him. He's the one that lies to the boss about the new victim to keep it away from the task force. He's the one that steers it in cohle's theory's direction. He knows cohle is smart so keep him close.

He also said family keeps you grounded, but he's obviously divorced now. In the past he's running around on his wife. The new detectives don't share the new case with him.

Over analyzing at its best.

If Marty is the killer it would be completely out of left field
snowdog90
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Marty is a lying, cheating, violent drunk. How is it a stretch to think he could kill.

Otoh, Cohle doesn't sleep, instead spending hours of his off time on this case. Why show him working on figuring out this case if he's actually the killer?
ellebee

Marty kind of seems to impulsive to do plan something out like that IMO.

Marty might choke a ***** out in a fit of jealous rage. He's not going to antler one up with some crazy sacrificial ****. This show is way too well written to resort to that kind of ridiculous reach. Some of you have been watching complete crap like The Following too much.
snowdog90
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm not saying Marty did anything, I'm just saying he makes more sense than Cohle as the 2012 killer.

Well, if you're advocating Cohle as the killer you could easily say he is the NEW killer and not the same one he and Marty are investigating.

Or you could say he just gets off on looking at dead people.

Just my opinion, but these two great actors don't go together. It seems very forced. It is like they both have the same slow talking and pausing style, so when they dialogue it sounds ridiculous. I like them both and the plot is fine, but their acting is distracting.

Completely disagree in regards to the acting. In fact, if McConaughey and Harreslon weren't the leads this show would be a carbon copy of Treme: great show that nobody really watches or cares about.
