Has there been any indication into what order theyre interviewing Marty and Rust?

At this point I don't think they've indicated. It does seem like they're in different rooms but I haven't even thought about that at all till you brought it up.

I only ask because they mention no records of his dad to Marty but not Cohle. Not sure why they woudn't bring it up to Cohle unless they're interviewing him first.

Right now I'm viewing this as their poker hand to get a read on him. They asked him about his leave to see his father but left the rest of the info out to see how he'd react. Maybe their trying to see if Cohle will slip up in questioning. I think they will eventually bring that piece up hence the clip in the upcoming episodes where Cohle tells them to get a warrant. Who knows, at this point if you isolate only Cohles interviews you don't get any hint of them looking into Cohle as a suspect. (you only get that from Marty's interview)

Woody H has a big glass window behind him. Matthew M has solid wall behind him, almost looks like break room.

In Episode 1, if I remember correctly, they show the interview date of Cohle as April 26 or 27 or something like that and the interview date of Marty as May 1 or 2.

You are correct.

And Cohle's interview was on a Thursday if y'all remember that as well....normally one I his days off, AKA drinking day.

So that means Marty's interview (if those dates are correct) is anywhere from the following Monday to Wednesday.

Based off memory.

The door is right behind Marty & in the other room it's right by the back of the wall...different rooms.

I'm telling you that watching that final monologue in a dark room with the surround sound REAL loud is one of the creepiest things I've ever seen. The music in the background is horrifying!

somebody mentioned it was the same room earlier in the thread so I was looking during the last episode and there was one shot that made it look pretty definitive that it was a different room. But maybe I'm wrong. I'll see if I can find it later.

No, not spoilers, just some ideas that put some of the themes of the show in context. No discussion of anything beyond episode 3.

I am finally caught up and can read the thread.

The quiet disturbing undercurrent of the show is amazing, and this is easily the best role ever for MM.
While I enjoyed episode 4 though, I thought it devolved a bit into more of a typical crime drama, I hope they get back to more of an episodes 2 and 3 vibe.

just got caught up. this is truly excellent.

I have to say, the amount of reverence shown towards Cohle's nihilism is surprising, even for the network like HBO

interesting, refreshing(?), but surprising nonetheless

Sorry to read that about Lovecraft, etc. That does not interest me in the least, and I hope the series does not go in some sort of supernatural direction.

So why do they ask about his dad? They interviewed cohle first, then Marty and they confront Marty about his dad not being heard of in Alaska in years. So they obviously checked alibis in between interviews. Cohle talks about his dad briefly and says him leaving Alaska for Texas was like a betrayal to his dad. When they found the first victim, cohle wasn't too surprised by the tree symbols, but he does ask the medical examiner and preacher what they mean.

Holy crap, as soon as it looks like they're tying up the loose ends, 50 more unanswered questions pop up. This show could still go in any direction, Cohle could be a genius serial killer, or he could be a vigilante badass. I have no idea.

Great episode-was kinda surreal seeing Rust outside of the interview room.

Anyone smarter than me mind summing up the last 15 minutes of the episode? Overall vibe I got was that Rust isn't convinced they got the right guy, goes searching for the "Yellow King," but the two black cops are implicating Rust as the one who killed the new victim. How was that leap made, aside from them having pics of Rust at the crime scene?

When they lay it out to hart hmtgats their theory. Catching the case, rust leading every step of the way, going rogue and always breaking every clue but letting Marty discover it is their theory that he basically was stringing him along and he had knowledge the whole time and was controlling how the investigation went.

But they are wrong. Cohle went off the grid for an extended period. We now know that. What's more likely is that he spent time taking out many responsible and along the way he discovered the end game or location of a kill spot. He will have been caught in that area because he was trying to solve it himself. Now I just have to fit in the rest of the equation

My best guess. His being off the grid and the multiple trips to the crime scene created suspicion. They determined through the evidence that it was possible that Cohle created the storyline.

I think Cohle discovered that someone "big" is involved, and went off the grid investigating on his own. The storage is his evidence room. The task force was never intended to actually find the murderer.

Great show, HBO does it again.

apparently Cohle's been working on the case and doing a great job of covering his tracks the past 10 years.

interesting that Maggie's coming in for an interview next
