How long do you want to ignore this user?
I posted this before episode 4 last week when I was RE watching the first 3 eps.

RE watched the first 3 eps today and only 7 minutes into this new one tonight...

*prediction alert*

I think the religious Tuttle is in on it

*end prediction *

Laugh at me when I'm wrong but RE watching his scene and the words here and there as it goes, I'm rolling with that. But I'm only 7 minutes into this ep so I reserve the right to change my mind in an hour

Oh, and not to toot my own horn but actually to toot my own horn.... Anyone with me on this now?

Wow. Ok, what did I just watch? Cohle sure looks more like a suspect now, hopefully because he's got so much to hide (vigilante stuff). But the guy committing suicide, Ledoux saying Cohle was the new one (or something), and Cohle going to that school and finding (revisiting?) those wood sculptures... Creepy stuff.

Maybe I've been wrong the whole time and Cohle is the killer. Maybe he is so diligent on the job because he needs to find someone to pin his killings on.

I hope not, and the thing that makes me think Cohle's not the guy is the convict that tells him he knows the killer and its a powerful guy.

I'm rambling. CRAP, gotta wait another week now.

I think back to episode 1 when Marty & Rust are interviewing Dora's mother and twice the camera goes to the photo of little Dora standing in front of 5 men on horses...

Feel like I just got done interval training!!!!!!

First 15 minutes my heart was going 90 to nothin. A lull in the middle of the show, then another 20, minutes at the end where my heart was going 90 to nothin. I've seen all of the major television shows over the past decade (I'm halfway through Breaking Bad right now) and I don't think I've EVER seen anything like this that gets me cranked during the ep..... Man....WHAT A RIDE!!!!!!!!!!!

The other thing that pointed them to Cohle was a man that looked like him and drove a vehicle like him "had been seen by 5 different people at 5 different times" at the location of the new murder. They have the crowd shot with him in it...boom. They start piecing all of this together.

This next 3 weeks is going to be almost unbearable having to wait 7 days between eps.

I'm not taking the time to look it up, but didn't someone predict 10 pages ago that we would be back at that school where the guy was mowing??????? Nice call whoever said that!!!!!!

Watching it again. Ledoux talks about a black star, he saw Cohle in a dream, time is a flat circle. Then Cohle explains "time is a flat circle" to the cops.

Then Cohle asks Ledoux "why the antlers?", and Ledoux just smiles at him.

Why would he ask Ledoux that if he knew Ledoux wasn't the killer? I don't think he would, I think he really thought Ledoux was the killer, and the cops interrogating him are wrong.

I thought this was very interesting considering the conversation of this thread so far.

quote:
I’ve enjoyed reading people theorize about what’s going to happen because it’s a sign that you’re connecting. But I’m also sort of surprised by how far afield they’re getting. Like, why do you think we’re tricking you? It’s because you’ve been abused as an audience for more than 20 years. The show’s not trying to outsmart you. And really if you pay attention… if someone watches the first episode and really listens, it tells you 85 percent of the story of the first six episodes.

And now I feel like I have to go back and rewatch episode one.

What the writer said now makes sense. Not from watching the first episode 3x but from tonight's.

Catching the case, rust leading every step of the way, going rogue and always breaking every clue but letting Marty discover it is their theory that he basically was stringing him along and he had knowledge the whole time and was controlling how the investigation went.

But they are wrong. Cohle went off the grid for an extended period. We now know that. What's more likely is that he spent time taking out many responsible and along the way he discovered the end game or location of a kill spot. He will have been caught in that area because he was trying to solve it himself.

Cohle isn't the killer.

When he is at the computer, he reorganized them based on weight.

The next scene, the black cops show him their current file....which lists the victim at 112 lbs.

The last one on Chole's computer is 55 lbs.

The killer is going younger each time...and Chole is a few steps ahead...hence the "you are wasting my time"...

None of them know who the killer is yet, but it's apparent that Tuttle and his cousin (TX gov) are involved...given the LA and TX (Livingston murder) connection.

This is bad...and it goes all the way to the top.

Satanic...or other similar occultist behavior implied.

"The Yellow King" theory got me thinking about Frank Miller's "That Yellow *******" which was a plot line in Sin City. The Yellow ******* is a serial rapist-young girl killer who is the son of a US Senator. He's also rotten, to the point his blood smells like garbage (remember how the cook said Cohle smelled like acid?) - the Yellow ******* is also monstrous looking, similar to how Cohle says there is a monster at the end of every tale.

So if there is some connection here, it lends credence to the theory that the killer is a not a redneck like Ledoux but a high ranking, respected citizen, or the relative of such a person. Also the person who puts the Yellow ******* down, Hartigan, is a hard boiled cop similar in some ways to Cohle.

Now I'm just noting similarities, it could be complete coincidence. Or it could be that Miller and the makers of True Decective were inspired by the same source material (the Chambers short story). But I thought it worth mentioning.

This show HAS to be included in the discussion now with The Wire, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, etc., as one of the all-time greats.

And we're only five episodes in.

I absolutely LOVE that Cohle dropped off the grid in '02 not because he lost the fire, or fell on hard times, or went crazy, but because he (likely) went vigilante to try and find the true killer and unravel the conspiracy all on his own. Just the way they hinted that Cohle could have been the one to kill Tuttle in 2010 was so damn cool. The way the audience at first is forced to only imagine the threads Cohle has unraveled, the things he's seen, been through, etc. in the past decade, before we may or may not flashback to some of these events over the final three episodes. The idea that Cohle has been investigating this thing in the shadows because literally no one else could be trusted. The idea that he was actually casing the present-day detectives, and not the other way around. And the way that final shot of the episode was the beginning of his covert crusade, leaving Cohle just as he took the first step on that path. With that, we saw the "beginning" of his journey, we've seen what he had to become, and now we (hopefully) get to go back and fill in some of the the blanks. All while simultaneously attempting to continue solving the case in the present.

Cohle is the True Detective, indeed.

For me, this is story-telling at its absolute peak. And I cannot wait to see how it ends.

Not to toot my own horn, but I brought up the theory of Cohle going off the radar for the last 10 years to work the case "off the books" back on page 5 of this thread. I figured he was not the type of guy to give up on a case.

I still think Hart knew something about Cohle's whereabouts because when Hart told the new detectives that he hasn't seen Cohle for years, the young detective gives the other detective this look like they know differently. I'm with Bunk in thinking that the Tuttles are in on it too.

Such a great show. I'm going to re-watch it once it is over and see if I can pick up on things that I missed.

My theory is that there was no falling out between Hart and Cohle but it is just a story they made up like, like the "shootout" with Ledoux. Hart knows that Cohle is the only one that can solve this case but he can't do it from behind the badge. Howver Cohle needs to have an inside man that can use the police resources to get him some information. I think they are both still working the case and being very careful to cover their tracks. The two detectives interviewing them have started putting some of the connection together but only have a very tiny view of the whole picture. I think Hart and Cohle are trying to get all the info they can from them while deflecting the suspicion.

I have some friends predicting that MM is the killer. I don't think so. I think it has to do with the preacher, governor's family. Some sort of state wide cover up.
I've read the writer's novel "Galveston" let's just say I don't expect this to have a happy ending.
I really like the setting of this story. South LA is a very unique place once we get into the sticks. Great side characters like the ex husband who's in jail.

Yep. I also thought it kind of looked like a monster with the stars as the eyes and the broken window the mouth.

The framing of Rust makes sense.

From a viewers perspective, it doesn't seem to add up for Rust to be the killer.

Why would it show him doing all the after hours digging through files? I guess he could have known the hurricane girl would be in there, and he was just looking for it.

But wasn't he in TX at that time of her death? Again, I guess he could have been driving to LA to do his thing, but I doubt it.

And if you had been driving over from your job in TX to do your thing, why take a job there? Closer to the action? To get caught? I doubt that, too.

I think the framing angle makes sense.

5 episodes, man, I can't believe I've gotten hooked so fast.
Bunk Moreland
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Rust ain't the killer. That "sense" is for the simple minded folks who love roller coasters and scream at every moment of a horror film.

Nothing wrong with them folks, but it's just not what is going to happen.

If it did, frankly, it'd be weak and cheap. And given who is behind this show....that's not how it's going to go.

I really hope this opens more doors for shows in the miniseries or anthology format. I love seeing a story get told and then ending it, rather than dragging it out for several seasons. In my opinion, this stuff is far more captivating/engrossing that any movie.

Nice comparison with Sin City. Could be coincidence but I definitely wouldn't be surprised if Frank Miller was inspired by it as well.

I think you could be right about them pretending to have a falling out and still working the case together... but isn't Hart in private security now? I guess he'd still have some access to certain things, but for the most part I'd assume he doesn't have the resources he would if he was still on the force.
