While I think many of the symbols are purposeful, I think many are overthinking the show. At its core it's a crime drama, every piece of exposition had come through rational deduction.
If I had to guess the ending, that will be juxtaposed against someone or something who can't be understood in simple terms, and we will be left with the feeling that evil or just bad behavior that can't be easily seen or understood is among us. That has been the undercurrent of the show from the beginning, even among the main characters.

Agreed.

Anybody else have a wife that HATES Marty with a passion?

I took up for him at one point last night when he put a beating on those guys who were banging his daughter. Big mistake. I think my wife thinks he's a worst person than whoever the killer is.

I agree too!

Did anyone else see that the last two Cohle interrogation had suicide linked to them? The guy knowing the yellow king....dead. Mother killing babies, Cohle asks for her to kill herself.

See the link attached.
Is this a product of theme, meaning, everything's connected? Or a brand new HBO show with not a lot of budget and needing to "reuse" actors?

Who'd have thought that a character who cheats on his wife multiple times isn't endearing to women? Marty is a POS who is too arrogant/full of pride to admit it.

My wife has a special loathing for all cheaters. She would detest him.

Of course you are right. However, I think the continued speculation is a testament to how well the show is made.

Heres another prediction/minor spoiler.

At some point in the next 2 shows, Cohle will break down and weep, either at the things he's done or the things happening around him.

Needs that Emmy moment for the awards show!

The Sean Penn effect.

How long have you been married? You never defend guys to your wife that skip out on family time to have ass sex with hot young chicks. It won't end well.

To me the best acting moment was the "you should kill yourself" scene. Unreal.

When he's eating his spaghetti in his chair, he looks like a pig. And a red neck. And a selfish man.
I'm pissed at her for using Cohle like that.
When he tells Marty he can buy the beer, it's because Marty owes him. He went to the station to get the ass kicking out of the way. He hates Louisiana and their bass akwards ways.
He's been watching the police station. He new they'd bring Marty in for questions and waited to follow him
and to fill him in on his personal investigation.

No way. He would have gone more ballistic than that. He yelled no then said God and turned off the tv. I'm thinking it's a confession of some kind that Cohle got but can't use and confirms the case is still open. Which would be frustrating to Marty.

I think the video is not if his girls. Confession, or something show the case is still open. Or Beth hooking up with someone nasty or connected to the case that proves she played Marty and caused his family to break up. Not caused, assisted is breaking his family up.

I love this show but hate that I'm becoming a M.M. fan. I had to watch him tell the girl in jail to kill herself several times because it was such a great scene. Can't wait to see where all of this is going.

Question -- What's the link between Tuttle and Marty's FIL? I missed that one.
Btron
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Nothing, just a out there theory that FIL and Tuttle are in the same high society sex orgy, kid, girl killing cult.
Stive

I'll gladly eat my crow if I'm wrong, but I'm becoming more and more convinced that the FIL has zero to do with it. Go back and watch that scene and there is zero that implies he's anything other than the father of the wife of a combustible cop. That scene was all about how Marty was getting along (or not getting along) with his wife, and by proxy, her family. Not about the killer hiding in the shadows.

I think there has to be some kind of connection with his daughters, at least the oldest. She was too young (I don't have kids so maybe I'm wrong) to be drawing dix with sexual connotation. Not to mention the figurine circle jerk she put together with the spiral and stars on her wall. Somebody had to have exposed her to that stuff, just seems like it would have to be from the FIL's side of the family.

Who knows, maybe that's a stretch. Seems like he wouldn't put all that in there though if it wasn't meaningful.
Ag_07

I do agree that his daughters and Tuttle are involved somehow. I just thought there was a more direct link between Tuttle and the FIL. Like they had business dealings of some kind or were acquaintances somehow.

A few thoughts.

I think Rust told Marty he could buy his beer wasn't about money at all, I think it was connecting to the same mentality of "type this up". Rust thinks Marty is a scumbag idiot that owes him many debts which is true. One thing that amazed me is when Marty and Rust were having their first blow up after the "type this up" scene that Rust didn't gently remind him that if it weren't for Rust Marty would still be in jail for murdering Ledoux. Of course Marty is one of the most selfish men alive and is incapable of seeing how anyone has a purpose in life other than to do things for him.

I'm doubting the FIL connection more and more as it gets deeper into the show and the FIL hasn't been a factor. The longer they wait the more it will feel off because there has been so little focus on it, it would feel kind of cheap.

One thing I did think about (though I doubt it) is that Marty's kids actually attend or did attend one of Tuttle's schools. Thinking back I find it interesting that every time religion was brought up Marty always defended it and he avoided being a part of any of the questioning at the Revival Tent. It could make sense because that is some foreshadowing.

I also think Marty's wife is a dangerous woman if she is capable of doing what she did with Rust with no thought at all as to how it would destroy him. Her and Marty are both incredibly selfish people with the ability to keep secrets and be evil.

I don't know that the video has Marty's girls in it for that reaction. Marty flies off the handle easily as it is if he sees abuse.

How do you know that? The shows not over. I don't think we'll know whether there are "tricks" or not until it all shakes out and we know who did it. Until then, we don't know what is our own fake "symbolism" that we've inserted into the show, and what's real.

People are claiming that Marty running over the bike and eating spaghetti sloppily are both "important aspects" of the show. We have no way of knowing that until it's all in the open.

I'm afraid you're gonna be wrong. I think we might ALL, me included, be wrong. This is the first time show for the writer and directors. So how are we supposed to know how this is all going to play out?
With Marty's daughters, I feel it just shows that as things outside of home are wild and out of control, so are things in his home. And it's also a direct reaction to his infidelity. You mess with crazy P your daughter turns into one. And it's the 90's, goth was very common in all types of families.

The interesting twist is the death of Tuttle. We can make the connection to his ministries and schools but with him being dead the question becomes who is doing the killing?

He may be the Yellow King and may be the guy behind the killings and the cover-up but someone else is actually doing the killing. When it comes to who is the killer I really have no idea.
