When Hart was looking at the video, I thought his strong reaction was due to seeing his older daughter. But since it was the killing of Fontenot that was a red herring.

Still, doesn't his older daughter have to be part of the final episode? Her sexual activity as a child - arrangement of the dolls & wildness as a teenager - fits too closely with the child abuse aspect of the show. Maybe her grandfather - Hart's father in law - is connected to the Tuttles. And possibly Maggie was also a victim or knew about her father. She seems wound pretty tight.

Just doesn't make sense all the stuff with the older daughter was just a coincidence and not connected to the sexual abuse ring.

And who dies in the final episode - Hart, Cohle, both?

Rust was talking about he could have been a painter, old scenes new details. Life is barely long enough to get good at one thing. This was right after they were in the storage unit.

Love how this show continues to mess with you even after you know rust and marty aren't involved, they throw out lines like that.

Agreed, you don't show a girl recreating a gangbang, having abnormal knowledge about sexual acts, drawing the same spiral that has been so prominent, and shown her having so many issues as an adult for no reason other than to show that Marty was losing control of his family. They have spent way to much time on that storyline for it to just to be fluff. I'd actually be slightly upset if they never explained this.

I see Marty finding a picture of his daughter in scarface's residence after capturing him. Marty draws his gun ready to blow this guys head off, a la Reggie Ledoux. Rust tries to talk him down, Marty doesn't give a sh*t, blows the guys head off, showing again that time is a flat circle.

It has been screen captured as being pinned on the wall in the Hart's home.

It is questionable how "intentional" that was by the show's creators.

Kind of lost in all of this, but I now question whether there will be any big reveal about how Cohle's daughter was killed, too.

Misread, your post. I doubt they mention Cohle's daughter again.

Didn't they reveal a long time ago that Cohle's daughter was run over in the driveway? Has never really had too much to do with the story so I'm wondering why you're looking for a big reveal.

'Get the hell outta here...You're classin the place up.' was a great lines by Cohle.

Another solid episode and answered a lot of questions, kind of slowed things down from the previous few though. I'm expecting a pretty wild finale. They have a lot of loose ends to tie up and I am guessing they don't get them all.

At this point I think one or both of Marty and Rust die and while they may get Lawnmower Man and a few others they can't stop the whole thing. Just too many people involved with too much power.

I really think Cohle will be dead by the end of the final episode. He has allowed this case to consume him for so long, and he will be killed trying to solve it.

Or........what if?

Marty gets himself killed by saving Cohle somehow. Marty really has nothing right now. His life is crap, with no communication with his children or ex-wife. He will see the opportunity to finally do some good. Some how make up for being a self-centered azzhole all those years. Do something, and be someone, his ex and his kids would be proud of.

Then Cohle gets a haircut, cleans himself up, and he and Maggie can live happily everafter.

There was a lot of speculation that it would end up being Cohle that ran her over while intoxicated.

I don't have expectations, just pointing out threads that may not have the closure some expected or wanted.

Or Cohle puts a gun in his mouth and eats a bullet.

Can remember the exact phrasing, but his answer to why he came back leads me to believe he is planning suicide after wrapping up the case.

Or the other two detectives stumbling around the bayou find Childress, Cohle, and Marty all dead with ton of evidence around them. Are found as heroes and segway into True Detective Season 2....

I loved the scene with the two detectives and lawn mower man. It all comes full circle with the detectives dilemma of what you're looking for is usually right under your nose.

For all you guys overthinking stuff, you're going to be extremely disappointed when they don't wrap up all these things that you think are important (death of Cohle's daughter, FiL link, Cohle's taillight, how Marty's daughter enjoyed her time as a chearleader etc.)

Yep, this.

The shows creators have said they're not in the business of trying to trick us. The reveal last night that the oldest daughter is on meds is the shows way of closing off the stories about Marty's life. The daughter was just mixed up in the head. She wasn't a part of it and the FIL isn't the grand master of Carcosa, nor is he Tuttle's step brother, and Maggie isn't the den mother or Ledoux's ex-girlfriend from high school. All of that was there to show how screwed up Marty's life was and for character development. All of the "the daughter is on the mess" is very much conjecture on our part as viewers.

I'll gladly eat crow if I'm wrong but an objective, un Lost-like watching of the show says that's the way it is. I don't get the impression that the creators had clues inserted in every back ground setting of this series.

My fear is they both die and season 2 is the two black guys taking over as the leads.

Or some other 2 actors pick up the case.

I think you might be right about this. Rust believes that Marty's killing of Ledoux kept them from getting to the next level and stopping more abuse/death. And it took him 17 years to get back to the same place.

They are going to repeat the same scene, and Marty is going to repeat the same action, thus keeping them from getting to the level above lawn mower man (who is definately not the mastermind behind it all).

This is Rust's hell.

I'm pretty sure the idea is that Season 2 will be wholly unrelated to Season 1. Different actors, different case, etc. Like finishing a true crime book and moving to another one.

I wonder if the fact that the wife is living in some fancy house is significant. I certainly got the feel when they were talking last night that she was trying to get from Hart what Rust was up to. Almost like she was waiting to report back to her leaders.

She arranged her barbies in the same positions that Marty saw on the video. Her drawings were very disturbing for a child that age. Either she's seen the video and pics, somehow or they did to her what they've been doing to others. And Marty prevented Cohle from talking to lawnmower man longer and killed ledoux before he could be questioned.
All a parent wants is to protect their children. Denial is a weird way to protect you're kid's. He's failed along the way somehow, just as Cohle failed to keep his daughter from getting hit by a car. They both carry the same guilt with different outcomes.

How exactly did Rust get from meth-cooker LeDoux to car mechanic/good guy LeDoux to old black lady maid to the Tuttles?

AgLaw, hope so. Just sure seems like a lot to cover in an hour.

Am I the only one who in a way doesn't want this to end??

Sometimes when I read a really good book, I start pacing myself to postpone finishing it. Extends the time I'm in it.

Can't wait til next Sunday, but sure don't want it to be over.

Transfer of a truck title from bad ledoux to good one. Employment records for the maid I think. Also, meant to tap quote button, not object button.

Good lord on some of these theories.

Marty didn't cut off Cohle's conversation with the lawnmower man to prevent him from getting to the truth. He cut it off because he just got critical information about LeDoux, that likely needed to be acted on quickly, so wasting time talking to the groundskeeper at a long-defunct school probably didn't seem relevant or necessary.

Maggie's big house doesn't mean she is part of it, it means she re-married well. She is not on some fact-gathering mission for the Yellow King.

I am in the camp, however, that does not believe that the oldest Hart daughter's role is done. I think it will be revealed, possibly after they resolve the case and are reviewing crime scene evidence (like a big bunch of pictures / videos at the lawnmower's house) that she witnessed some stuff as a child. It will send Marty over the edge in some way, maybe prompt his suicide to atone for his sin of inattention.

What are the two other detectives names? I'm feeling guilty referring to the them as the "black guys"

The daughter's painting from last night's episode. Blonde woman, blind-folded, with black stars on her neck?
