This format is the future of television. Or at least I hope it gains steam as a more common format. I want to see shows where the showrunner says "I have a story to tell and it's going to take me 25 episodes to get there", rather than "okay, fellow writers, we're up to season five now. So what are we going to do this year? Let's just start writing and then maybe we'll figure it out by the time we get to the end."

Yep. This is why Network shows are really handicapped.

Agree 100%. It has so much more potential, but when some of those shows don't succeed and get canceled before the story concludes, it pisses viewers off. It ends up as a catch 22 because of viewers like me that wait to watch a network series until it has demonstrated success, which therefore makes it harder to get the early ratings to demonstrate that success.

Agreed. It may only work if it has people attached to it that we already trust. Then again, I'm starting to trust almost anything that HBO does, so maybe this is the start.

yeah, I trust HBO, fx, and AMC enough to give them a chance from the start. The networks have pretty much lost me though. Hannibal is the only network show that I watch, and I'm expecting to eventually get my shirt pulled over my head and punched in the gut on that one.

Wait a second...

Is that a three dimensional image of the spiral we've seen the whole show? Am I the only one who glossed over that? Kind of lends a little credence to the whole "it was a real vortex that Cohle could see" motif if LMM knew about it as well.

The writer mentioned he considered going the supernatural route with the resolution, so I do consider it somewhat real - while giving viewers that don't buy the supernatural crap the option to chalk it up to Cohle's drug use.

That being said, I am still very intrigued with what Marty's daughter's troubles were supposed to mean, if anything. It seemed like that had a clear path to develop or contribute to the main story line, but kind of just fell off the map.

I think it is a product of Marty ignoring his family while working on these creepy cases and probably leaving case files open for years around the house.

All that to show how checked out he is with his family life. He doesn't necessarily like it, but I don't think he realizes what a ******* he is being.

stupid filter couldn't make the link work.

Anyway, vulture.com has a great article up with the director.

Looking at the comments on several reviews of the finale, there’s a particularly heavy obsession, borderline insanity, with why the “clues” about Marty’s daughter Audrey (the drawings, dolls, and crown) were never addressed.
I never read into what she was doing as having any relation to the crimes or the cult. I read Audrey’s behavior as being the direct result of an inattentive father. Seeking male attention in other places, or even seeking to get into trouble, perhaps, to get the attention of her father; it was not related to the killings or anyone around them. I don’t even remember seeing the spiral in her room. The general chatter around those things is great, but it’s probably the kind of chatter that wouldn’t have happened had all those episodes been released at once. The anticipation-speculation that comes with a weekly schedule is a double-edged sword. Because people have more time to talk about things, some crazy ideas get a lot of attention.

there you go.

I attributed the "green eared spaghetti monsters" green ears to him mowing lawns...guess I was off there.

The only reason I can think of the calvary showing up so fast is the media/police/etc was contacted by the friend of Cohle who was the sniper/bartender/etc

or

Cohle and Hart were being tailed as evident in the conversation between Cohle and the younger black detective.

I disagree completely. And even if someone on the staff did plant that there it's still to show that just like he overlooks things in regards to his work, he was overlooking the obvious signs of his daughter reaching out for attention. It didn't have to lead down a road towards some grand conspiracy including his daughters.

but to each his own. Glad the director seemed to share the exact same view I always treated that line of theories.

I agree. House of Cards Season 2 is going to give it a run for its money, though.

McConaghey is super hot right now after Wolf, Dallas Buyers Club, Bernie, Mud, and now True Detective. He is about to star in Christopher Nolan's next movie. And follows all that up with Magic Mike 2? WTF?

Thanks for finding that, MW03 and Bunk.

However, I agree with dlance:

That's also the director speaking, of course, not the writer.

Magic Mike 2 isn't a guarantee by any means. Not only is Steven Soderbergh NOT directing, but Channing Tatum is writing the screenplay this go around. For that reason alone, I don't see it ever happening.

Besides, as mentioned, McConaughey has Interstellar next, which has massive potential, and then he's following that up with Gus Van Sant's Sea of Trees, which sounds like another Oscar-type indie. In other words, NOT Magic Mike. (Always, always read IMDB with a grain of salt.)

Either way, we've never seen a run like this... ever. From starring in Mud, which was many people's favorite movie of 2013, to winning Best Actor for a different movie the very same year, to an awesome, smaller role in a Scorsese Best Picture contender, to following THAT up with a phenomenal, ground-breaking show that will likely garner him an Emmy in August, to topping it all off with what could very well the movie/blockbuster of the year in Interstellar. Nothing like this has ever been done, spanning movies to TV, indies to blockbusters, in a year-and-a-half long span.

But it has to end at some point. And if that means following all that up with a sequel to another huge hit of his from the year prior, I could think of much worse scenarios. That is, if it ever even happens in the first place.

Then he must not have a daughter. To have a Ken doll making out with Barbie is one thing but a gang bang that resembles a cult raping a little girl is another and it's not trivial. Her graphic drawings can be seen as trying to get attention from dad and mom, but the doll display was over the top and even a selfish, inattentive dad should be alarmed. What a cop out. Next time give the final episode 2hours.

I love MM, and am really happy for the McConnaissance... but that Drew Magary hater's guide to the Oscar's rant about him always playing a Texan did make me laugh.

quote:
He played a Texan! WHAT A ****ING STRETCH. Just a remarkable transformation from Regular Laconic Texan to Alarmingly Thin Laconic Texan. It might just be the best Texan role McConaghey has ever played, and Lord knows you have choices in that department. Just look at his iMDB profile!

- Mysterious Texan, True Detective (2014)
- Scary Texan, Frailty (2001)
- Horny Texan, Dazed & Confused (1993)
- Homicidal Texan, Killer Joe (2011)
- Brave Texan, Lone Star (1996)
- Guy Literally Named Dallas, Magic Mike (2012)
- Matt Schaub, Untitled ESPN Docudrama (2018)

I couldn't even see the actor anymore. All I could see was the Texas. Just an amazing performance.

So basically, people who went all-in on Marty's daughter being one of the abuse victims were dead wrong, and they are now taking it out on the writers for being "lazy" for not further explaining the reason for the drawings/doll set up.

Seems reasonable

Again, because in a show about young girls getting gang banged, a scene of a young girl setting up a gang bang with her dolls, and the camera focusing on the scene, is TOTES not related and we are absolutely CRAZY for thinking it did. Yep.

@Guitarsoup

I get what you are saying but who knows? TC is probably right, that it's not a guarantee by any means. It may never see the light of day, and if it does, he may not be in it.

I thought you were one of those guys that is still dismissing it because it's a movie about naked dudes, when the fact remains, it made a lot of money, and was critically successful as well. In fact, I'd say it helped MM's comeback just as much as some of his other recent films have.

I just really hope he doesn't do something stupid like a disaster or giant monster movie and ruin his career.

I mean, its not like the show could have demonstrated Marty being an absentee parent by:

1. Aubry: Dad, will you show me how to ride my bike? Marty: No, I have a date tonight.

2. Aubry: Dad, will you help me on my school science project? Marty: No, I have a date tonight.

3. Aubry: Dad, will you help me build this derby cart for Girl Scouts Jamboree? Marty: No, I'm drinking tonight.

4. Aubry: Dad, will you help me fly a kite? Marty: No, i'm still hungover from last nights drinking

Etc.

I'm not mad that the suspicion wasn't confirmed or wrapped up.It just ticks me off that some guy said "I
have no idea where viewers got the idea from". Like it's normal for little girls to play that way, draw those things, become ****s and take meds for being bipolar.

MM2 just seems like the type of thing that is "We have to do 2 because 1 made us so much money!" Hopefully it is something that doesn't get made, just like all these sequels like Speed 2 shouldn't have been made.

Anyway, McConaghey is rocking everything right now. I would say Lincoln Lawyer and Bernie really started the run for him.

Is the person drawn at the far left pregnant or a fat, ugly lady with flowers on her dress? That drawing is not like the others. I think they wanted this to go somewhere, but decided there wasn't enough time and to focus on other resolutions. And that's ok.

Not saying I believe it, Mazzag, but lawnmower man's girlfriend was a largish unattractive woman who liked "flowers" all over her....
