[We're going to keep this thread cleaned up for updates and discussion on military action in this Iran/Israel/US conflict. Take the extended conversation on China's oil demand and the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve to a different thread please -- Staff]

Destroying strategic economic assets is what you do when you give up on regime change.

Uh what? Yeah taking their money flow out and fuel means no regime change lol

The news about the Internet in Iran effectively being shut off gave me a thought earlier about what kind of internal propaganda may still be influencing or suppressing any opposition to the regime. I saw early on that Israel had hacked one of the major Iranian TV networks to broadcast messages directly to the population, but I would imagine much of the terrestrial transmission infrastructure has now either been destroyed or disabled by the regime.

May be time to send in some Commando Solo birds and do some broadcasting of our own (if not done already), assuming the skies are safe enough to fly C-130s at altitude.

Edit: Dangit, looks like we retired Commando Solo two years ago.

Didn't realize they had Taco Bell in Tehran…

If this is true, this is a massive cluster F on the infrastructure and could result in massive utilities issues.

Wow.

Tehran is built on the side of a mountain and open gutters with water constantly flowing downhill. That's an efficient way to burn the city down

It's everywhere on Twitter. Prove it wrong and I'll take it down. I'm not going to derail the thread because you decide not to believe something.

Would burning the city down be a good thing or bad?

I think lb3 stated it pretty simply, if they are damaging economic infrastructure, that doesn't really indicate that they have a long-term plan, so ... good and bad?

Complete and absolute capitulation/collapse of the regime currently in power is absolutely necessary before anything meaningful can come forward. Maybe what comes forward has a 20% chance of being Western friendly, maybe a 70% chance who knows... But complete destruction of the ruling party of the last 50 years is a must. Whatever comes next is almost assuredly better. It is hard to imagine what worse would look like in the current power environment.

If you're hoping to replace the regime with one friendlier to the west, don't do anything that hurts the civilian population.

Burn down Tehran and whoever comes to power next may hate us more than the Ayatollahs did.

So, who comes to the table for Iran when they run out of stuff to shoot? It seems like they might already be at this point, or will be in the next few days - and we're just killing regime-backed successors at this point.

I certainly wouldn't raise my hand to take that job, for sure...but it has to be somebody, right?

We've been assured that there is some sort of pro-Iranian line of succession, but it doesn't really seem like that's the case now, unless it's Reza Pahlavi, but Trump seems ambivalent about his succession.

The President is the best bet, yes? But how much control does he have over the future Ayatollahs? If we kill most of them, does that strengthen him to negotiate? Is their nuclear program really worth this much destruction?

Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but how would securing the uranium make Iran more stabile? Maybe because we wouldn't be bombing them to the same degree or ???

Because without securing the uranium theyre weeke or at most a few months short of 10 nuclear bombs

Maybe I'm playing semantics here and agree that this would make them less of a threat, but how does that make them more "stabile"?

Because without the nearing nuclear capability, the regime is powerless. A power vacuum would occur and the military would crumble knowing that they no longer have a last line of defense to fight. They'll scatter like the roaches they are.

Not sure if I like this or not:

Couldn't it simply be knocked off-line fairly easily? I read that the generators operating the pumps there were hit on day 1, and surely there aren't any tankers getting filled there at this point?

I'm dubious of most 'counts' of drones/missiles but that's a fairly official one.

Check out the "true size" of Iran. When overlaid with the U.S., it goes from El Paso to Seattle, Bozeman, Montana to Phoenix, AZ.

Lots land for an invading Army to control.
When the truth comes out, do not ask me how I knew.
Ask yourself why you did not.

Seizing Kharg Island would be consistent with Trump's strategy for Venezuela after removing Maduro. We secured Venezuelan oil production and then set up a way for the proceeds to funnel back to the Venezuelan people instead of the regime.
