Sometimes things these days are made in such high quality resolution that it actually makes things look worse in a way.

Like something about this feels awkward with all of the extreme closeups on their faces and the noticable perfect make up jobs. It feels unnatural almost like a soap.

I love the fantasy genre and i want to love this show but man...between this and the trailer, the production value looks so...flimsy. Bezos should hire the set/production crew behind GoT for a show like this.

I'm actually getting the opposite vibes. I have also been following this for years (since they originally announced years ago that a studio picked up the option to produce), and they are spending more per episode than what they spent on GoT. So, Amazon has put up the dollars to produce a good product. If it does look flimsy, it's not because Amazon did not give it the financial support.
I never doubted they spent money...i just dont see that money within the production of the content they've released. You don't think it looks cheap? Like everything from the costumes and set design look like a thin veneer. Nothing looks worn or lived in. It's all too...crisp. Too manufactured looking.

For me it has been long enough from my read of the series, especially those first handful of books, that I cannot recall the more minor scene-to-scene details like this. I imagine that for a lot of people who read the books it may be the same way.

Either way, I agree with Micah. I am excited to see the adaptation.
This is where I'm at as well. My only concern is that the story is so dense that when they pare it down they story might become a little incoherent. Essentially I hope they have a really good editor. Considering the amount of money being thrown at it that likely won't be a problem.

I was not looking for that (crisp). I was focused on CGI, costumes, and overall set. I thought the weaves look amazing, shadar logoth looked terrifying, the mydraal looked great.

You know what I think it is? The boots.

Quote:

It's all about the boots."

"But"

"You see," Mat said, pulling the laces tight, "a lot of men don't have to worry much about what boots to wear. They're the poorest of folks. If you ask one of them 'What boots are you going to wear today, Mop?' their answer is easy. 'Well, Mat. I only have one pair, so I guess I'm gonna wear that pair.'"

Mat hesitated. "Or, I guess they wouldn't say that to you, Setalle, since you're not me and all. They wouldn't call you Mat, you understand."

"I understand," she said, sounding amused.

"Anyway, for people that have a little coin, the question of which boots to wear is harder. You see, average men, men like me…" He eyed her. "And I'm an average man, mind you."

"Of course you are."

"Bloody right I am," Mat said, finishing with his laces and sitting up. "An average man might have three pairs of boots. Your third best pair of boots, those are the boots you wear when you're working at something unpleasant. They might rub after a few paces, and they might have a few holes, but they're good enough to keep your footing. You don't mind mucking them up in the fields or the barn."

"All right," Setalle said.

"Then you have your second best pair of boots," Mat said. "Those are your day-to-day boots. You wear those if you are going over to dinner at the neighbors. Or, in my case, you wear those if you're going to battle. They're nice boots, give you good footing, and you don't mind being seen in them or anything."

"And your best pair of boots?" Setalle asked. "You wear those to social events, like a ball or dining with a local dignitary?"

"Balls? Dignitaries? Bloody ashes, woman. I thought you were an inn-keeper."

Setalle blushed faintly.

"We're not going to any balls," Mat said. "But if we had to, I suspect we'd wear our second best pair of boots. If they're good enough for visiting old lady Hembrew next door, then they're bloody well good enough for stepping on the toes of any woman fool enough to dance with us."

"Then what are the best boots for?"

"Walking," Mat said. "Any farmer knows the value of good boots when you go walking a distance."

Setalle looked thoughtful. "All right. But what does this have to do with being a nobleman?"

"Everything," Mat said. "Don't you see? If you're an average fellow, you know exactly when to use your boots. A man can keep track of three pairs of boots. Life is simple when you have three pairs of boots. But noblemen… Talmanes claims he has forty different pairs of boots at home. Forty pairs, can you imagine that?"

She smiled in amusement.

"Forty pairs," Mat repeated, shaking his head. "Forty bloody pairs. And, they aren't all the same kind of boots either. There is a pair for each outfit, and a dozen pairs in different styles that will match any number of half your outfits. You have boots for kings, boots for high lords, and boots for normal people. You have boots for winter and boots for summer, boots for rainy days and boots for dry days. You have bloody shoes that you wear only when you're walking to the bathing chamber. Lopin used to complain that I didn't have a pair to wear to the privy at night!"

"I see… So you're using boots as a metaphor for the onus of responsibility and decision placed upon the aristocracy as they assume leadership of complex political and social positions."

"Metaphor for…" Mat scowled. "Bloody ashes, woman. This isn't a metaphor for anything! It's just boots!"

I think if they can just do a good job with Mat I'll be happy. I can forgive them messing up anything else.

I'll be able to get past the changes as long as they stay true to the characters. What made me enjoy the series so much is the amazing character arch's Mr. Jordan developed.

I'm torn on whether I should try and reread the books to remember what happens in the series outside of the major plots. I just remember how miserable the middle books and I think that's what's stopping me.

Yeah you could balefire entire books, such as Crossroads of Twilight, and nothing would be missed. Just read a summary on wikipedia and move on. I love Jordan, but having your wife as editor may not be the best.

Best thing to come out of those slog middle books were hilarious amazon book reviews

I don't care that Woman A is standing with her hand on her hip, her foot tapping in impatience, with an eyebrow raised while her eyes try to burn a hole into Man A's head while he says something stupid.
Just tell me she's impatient and frustrated. I'll fill in the rest.
Overall, slowest book with hardly anything happening. It almost made me put the entire series down

After I finished reading last year, I had a serious desire to restart it immediately. There were definitely some parts that dragged or that I wasn't into, but I still loved the series overall. It probably helped that I was able to read it all at once though rather than waiting for additional books to come out.

I will say that the slog from books 7 to ~10 isn't nearly as noticeable when you can go straight from one book to the next. It was pretty brutal when there were years between the books, though.

That could definitely be an issue because I read them as they came out starting with book 1 which was almost 32 years ago. Good god.

This is exactly it. This is just one long story, and there has to be some catch up time where you're not with the main characters. In a single book it might be a few chapters, but in a story this long that story cleanup was several books. Utterly maddening when reading them as they came out, but not so bad now that you know you're rolling right into better stuff.

As someone who has the read entire series multiple times, I agree with this sentiment. Also, while parts are definitely slow, there are also some wonderful scenes that you miss out on if you skip and just read the summaries.

I think there were better ways to do it, still not a fan of how he handled the Asha'man. Just never really developed them, and the Mahel heel turn was one of the least surprising, most drawn out thing in the books. He could have made him a real villain, but I think he just had to many villains to deal with.

I had that thought when I was reading the series, but I think at some point you just have to bring it home. An extremely developed Mahel and the Asha'mam might have required two more books.

M'Hael is the title Mazrim, one of the false dragons, gives himself. Rand puts him in charge of training the male channelers, and as mentioned, it was a betrayal that was telegraphed from miles away.

can't remember his real name, It's the Mhael of the ashaman. He is the leader of the male mages. He ends up becoming one of the Forsaken in the last couple of books. Another one he could have resolved better or just gotten rid of was Padan Fain, IMO

The TV show is going to be significantly different compared to the books. They are going to hit the high points of the books, but motivations and travel paths between the points are changing. While the WoT series is my favorite series and have read them multiple times, they do have some shortcomings and there is the slog. But the TV series will be able to change the story enough to address these deficiencies.

I am excited. It's going to be different to make it fresh for me. But close enough where it will hit the best parts of the story.
