I wish I hadn't clicked on the spoiler.

I guess I'm the only person who liked Failed

I think I would have liked her a lot more if they had spent 2 less books on her, and 2 more books developing Perrins abilities. It got pretty repetitive with Perrin wondering why Faile didn't understand he loved her.

That review did away with all the goodwill that the negative review from Rolling Stone fostered.

IMHO they pretty much confirmed that Rafe just made up a bunch of stuff along the way. Fairly safe to say that the rumors about Rand, May, and Perrin not being the three is going to be true. Pretty disappointed

Sepinwall not liking it is not a good sign. He has good opinions and tends to give shows real chances even when it's not his cup of tea. I overlap with a lot of his opinions and like reading his reviews. He's not your normal Rolling Stone writer.

I'm getting nervous but I also knew this show wouldn't be the next GoT, it's just not as edgy of a story. However, his opinions on character and plot development worry me the most. No matter how good the story is, the show writers need to bring the characters to life with good screenwriting and actor choices.

Even after all that I'm still optimistic I will enjoy the show as a book nerd. However, it might not draw in the masses and therefore be at risk of cancellation.

The real important question, do we use this thread as a mostly spoilers free discussion and start a new one for spoilers?!

There has to be multiple.

*Book Reader's Spoiler Thread
*Non-Book Reader's Spoiler Thread
*Watched, but didn't really pay attention so I missed something and YOU spoiled it for me on an internet message board Thread

Was about to ask the same question. I think we start a new thread. Not sure how many - spoiler vs non spoiler. There seems to be less than 10 of us posting here.

I would say if someone wants to start a non book readers thread, go for it. This thread already has years of posts with spoilers in it.

Thanks for starting that new thread. I agree, let's keep this the full on spoiler thread.

This book series has always been too intimidating for me to pick up. I appreciate that it's a completed series, but after reading how many books there are and how much filler was in the middle of the series allegedly, I really hope to finally get to experience this story as a good TV show.
The filler problem is a little overstated these days. It was maddening when I read them on release, but with the whole series out, you're not forced to wait two years for the next book and can breeze through the slog pretty easily.

I agree with this. I read the entire series from March to August 2020, and I thought the middle books were good. I can see how having a break of a few years in between would be frustrating, but they develop the story very nicely.

So, I'm looking forward to this on Friday, but if Rand isn't the Dragon Reborn then the whole thing is crap. RJ was very specific with the binary nature of the One Power, and that the Dragon had to be a male. The entire narrative blows up without that.

I HIGHLY doubt Rand is not the DR. Most just think they're trying to build the importance of all 5 of the Emond's Fielders and keep people guessing longer.

I've been pretty critical so far but man I can't help but be super hyped! So close now.

I think it will be fun to speculate here how each character will get through their respective arch's with changes along the road.

Are they going to make the 5 of them Ta'veren. Or only the 3 boys, like the book. I don't think I would care about it if they changed this though.

Someone on the non-spoiler thread mentioned that the episodes may actually drop at midnight GMT which means they'll be available tonight in the U.S. Has anyone else been able to find definitive information about the release time? I did some searching this morning, and the time has not been part of the announcements.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't they all 5 Ta'veren in the books? Rand, Mat, Perrin, Egwene, and Nynaeve? Or maybe I am misremembering. I thought the 3 guys were early on and the other 2 picked it up later. Or maybe I am construing it with just regular old influence and power.

No, just the three dudes are ta'veren. Jordan was asked specifically and said that while women can be ta'veren, none of the major female characters in the books are.

Logain can identify Taveren by seeing a glow around them. Since his role is expanded I'd love to see from his perspective seeing Rand for the first time. Might put to rest who is and who isn't meant to be in the show?

In TEOTW Rand is about to fall into the palace garden and sees Logain staring directly at him amongst a crowd of thousands. We later find out that Logain was staring due to Rand glowing incredibly bright.

Almost posted this in the other thread. Whew.

I'm kinda disappointed they didn't explain a bit more of the breaking of the world with Lews Therin to start off.

The single episode that aired years ago was bad, but an interesting explanation of how we got to the start of the series.

rumors about complete rewrites of Mat* and Perrin are true. Mat is not near as happy go lucky as I was hoping, and while they resolve Perrin's marriage, I don't like it.

*Not daughters but that whole situation made him too serious.

Didn't enjoy the pacing. This thing has a huge fanbase… you don't have to have the trolloc attack in the first episode and rush everything.

That being said, the Trolloc attack in the Two Rivers was fantastic and brought the same memories back in a great way.

I think I'm going to have to sit and explain a bit to my wife beforehand.

Also, did I completely miss why Thom wasn't introduced in the first episode?

ETA: rumors about complete rewrites of Mat and Perrin are true. Disappointing.

Complete rewrites? Not quite. Those are just Mat's sisters, not his daughters like the rumors claimed. Also, Perrin axing his wife is actually a great way for them to set up his struggle between the wolf/man and/or ax/hammer.

Brigitte was though, right? I thought everyone in the hunt was one when they were alive?

I don't think she is by default. Being bound to the Horn does not automatically make one ta'veren, but some Heroes bound to the Horn (Artur Hawkwing) are ta'veren. Possible that Brigitte is ta'veren sometimes but not others.

Just finished. Good, not great so far. Was a little slow at times, but the first half of book 1 was slow too aside from the Trollocs & Fade at the beginning.

  • Agree with c-jags that I wish they would've done more with the Breaking to start off. Seeing Dragonmount form would make it more significant when you see it later in the series. I guess they still could put it in at some point, but I doubt it.
  • Moiraine's and Lan's tub scene was a little Witcher-esque and made me laugh.
  • I like the way they set up Perrin's internal struggle. I think it'll be easier for non-book readers to understand it this way.
  • They left Emond's Field quickly with seemingly little explanation or protest from their families. I know it was to lead the Trollocs away, but they didn't really do more than have a few nods.
  • Really liked the story Manetheren.
  • Shadar Logoth was rushed a bit, but there's really only so much running away from a shadow they could do.
  • Glad we got a Bela namedrop at one point.
  • I'm guessing the Aiel was Stone Dog based on the figure Mat found on him?
  • Feel like they're setting up early books Mat fairly well.
  • CGI a bit dodgy at times. Hopefully that gets better. Did they use some actors for the Trollocs at times though? Wish they'd do that more like the orcs in LotR.
