I watched all 3 episodes over the weekend and while it's far from perfect I enjoyed it. There is a lot of teen angst, but honestly that's pretty true to Eye of the World. Now if they have somebody other than Rand being the Dragon Reborn I'm turning it off. My wife liked it as well, but I'm not sure how well she would have followed it without me filling her in on the lore.

The diversity aspect doesn't bother me, because the only person that is crucial to fit the description in the books is Rand and they got that one right.

Glad to see the **** showrunners from early SyFy channel shows are still employeed. Good for them!

Also when I read the books and pictured Two Rivers, a small farming/hunting community tucked away from the rest of the world; ethnic diversity was not what came to mind.

Amazon going to work in black and asian elves when they present their LOTR show as well?
That had to have been pretty jarring for you.

Pretty much where I'm at. Its been 15 years since I read any of the books. Need to go back and reread them + the final 3 by Sanderson that I didn't ready for whatever reason.

Wife is somewhat interested and I am trying to fill on the lore with what I remember.

So it seems from the responses here that so far most of the non-book readers enjoyed it? That to me is the biggest thing.

I've followed the WOT subreddit for years and I've notice that most new book readers get hooked between TDR (2) and TSR (4). There are always a few nerds like myself that are hooked from the get go but doesn't seem to be the majority.

Hoping as more episodes air and the world opens up that so does the audience.

I was hooked by the end of book 1, but the first part of book 1 (which basically corresponds with episodes 1-3) drug a bit. It was the classic "people in a fantasy book travelling on foot for a while" bit. I'm really hoping the season just gets better and better, especially now that we have to rely on people coming back each week for the next episode.

I guess it has been too long since I read the books. I did not like the portrayal so far of Mat. Thought he was more a "happy-go-lucky" cad. But he just is brooding even before he picked up the dagger.

Well if you blame the actor, he's being replaced next season

That came from the changed family life, his dad apparently is an adulterer and his mom is a drunk. Not really sure why that change was made yet.

Have watched an episode a day and am caught up. I am a huge fan of the books. I knew some story work was going to have to be done to move things along in a show format, condensing/combining things.

The costume comments - yes I have had similar thoughts, but one difference between this and GoT is that there is such a heavy handed fantasy aspect to these books all throughout that GoT didn't necessarily have. It's almost like it's more glitzy because it's so fantasy-laden. I liked how they did the white cloaks, but understand if you didn't and wish they were more gray than white. From what I remember though, they were sticklers for order and upkeep, so it kind of makes sense.

Casting - I think some others have summarized my thoughts on this well. Overall the cast seems very well done! This was going to be a HUGE make or break. I am very impressed so far through 3 episodes with Rand in particular. He seems to be about exactly what I had imagined. Nynaeve is strong as well. I think the Egwene actress is unfortunately a bit weak. That can change though.

World building - I think if we are patient we will get our fair share of this. I mean Dana already spewed off some major places. I don't remember the first book hardly at all so maybe she did in those too but I doubt it.

Story building - I think it's gone okay so far… they seem to really have set this first part up to hook non book readers in. Hopefully with more time the breaking, Lews Therin, Forsaken, etc. are really expounded upon.

Casting hits (IMO)
Lan, Mat, Thom

Misses
morraine - books talk about her beauty, Rosamund is not beautiful, but her acting makes up for it somewhat
Egwyn - no comment

Other than that, I have really enjoyed this, so far.

The more I've thought on it, the more I think that the most miscast character, or maybe even rather mis-portrayed, is Egwene. What do y'all think?

I always pictured Egwene as a bit more of an independent hardhead, especially early on. I could completely be misremembering from when I read the books, but she is a strong, vocal person. I just didn't get that from this actress.

Don't get too attached to the actor playing Matt.

I'm fine with the acting, but the actress herself, God Bless her, is very homely imo. I am very distracted by the moles all over her face and it's hard for me to not think of a Witch when I see her.

me too. Egwene is a hottie and probably my wife's favorite character. The actress is not good or appropriate for the role.

So I guess I will throw out my thoughts on the first three episodes. Not sure it will add anything to the discussion.

There were some problems but am hopeful. Overall, I was not overwhelmed, but the bones are there for a great show. I'm not overly concerned because it typically takes a few episodes and even a season before a show finds it stride. I am going to watch every episode regardless of how bad it is, but this is not bad, just not great.

Negatives

1) everyone has said it, but the pacing is really fast. Just moved so fast. If the show is successful, they will have plenty of time to add the layers we want to see without rushing through them. I am excited to see the world building in pieces at a time. But, for example, the reasoning and explanation to leave Emonds Field felt so rushed and made little sense.
2) casting is meh. As stated above, they didn't have to go multiculturalist with the main 5 as Jordan interwove plenty of different cultures throughout the books. It's off putting. Egwene is certainly not pretty enough. As it stands, none of the cast will replace the images in my head for the main 5. But moiraine and lan are close to what I imagined except Lan was a little bulkier in my mind. And of course moiraine shorter.
3) wow factor. Just not overwhelmed with any aspect, yet. I was purposely keeping my expectations down, but still felt like a single instead of a home run. I have heard that episode 4 really is great and we will find out soon enough. And we have the climax at the end of season 1 to look forward to. So hopefully we see the grand slam at the eye of the world or tarwin gap.

Positives

1) the acting has been great. While I am disappointed with appearances, the actors are hitting the rights notes with me.
2) story changes. As a super fan, I really do not mind the changes they have made. I like that they added some depth to each character to better understand motivations. It feels more fresh than a straight adaptation.
3) CGI I actually thought they did a good job. The trollocs looked great. Mydraal looked frightening. Other than there be more colors representing each weave, the one lower use looks great! It's not marvel movie quality, but it definitely get the job done.
4) It's wheel of time on TV!!! I was always going to be lenient with this. I'm just so happy that a story that has meant so much to me is finally on TV. I've read this series probably 20 times.

My brother who is also a big fan of the books was more disappointed than me. He will still watch it through the end, but he gives it a 5/10. His and my wife bith loved it as non readers. Overall I am in the 6.5,7/10 so far.

Here's to hoping that episode 4 is a solid entry as rumored.

Fair post. Think I would keep it in the same rating range. I wish the production value felt a little more similar to GoT or the Witcher. Not every character has to look flawless in makeup and costume. It gives it more of that CW sci fi channel vibe vs premium television.

Meh...didn't care for a lot of his answers. Vague, defensive, and a lot of homerism. His answer to "four Ta'veren" was just sad.

The stuff previously linked from Sanderson tells me who I wish was in charge here.

Re-watched the first two episodes and am higher on it than I was on the first watch, especially episode 2. Gonna watch episode 3 again tomorrow before I dive into 4. It's not perfect, but there are good moments and casting decisions here. Interested to see where they take it.

Brandon Sanderson was linked earlier, but he answered a. Decent amount of questions on Reddit last week as well. He was somewhat of a consultant on the tv project, and they seem to have taken some of his suggestions.
My takeaway is that he is overall satisfied with their choices, and there are a few choices he definitely didn't agree with

I watched all 3 last weekend while my wife was out of town. Pretty critical at the time.

Then watched 2 with her Sunday night after she got back and i enjoyed it a lot more. I gave her a 2 minute primer beforehand (male and female witches, breaking of the world, dragon, dark one, dragon reborn, aes sedai) and that actually made it a bit better for me on the second viewing. Also the questions were "oh those are the white cloaks right?" Instead of "who are these guys?" With a pause to explain. They did a pisspoor job of throwing people into the middle of a plot.

I think I'll enjoy it more from here on out.

I'd rate it as a 6.5 with lots of upside. Sets are gorgeous and the acting is good enough.

At this point, the most important takeaway is that it doesn't suck. With the lore complexity and the acting quality downgrade you always see with fantasy, there was a lot of bomb potential with this one. so just setting the stage in a non-groan-inducing way is enough for me.

Dragon mount and Adam are going to be fawning over it.

I'm not surprised the series has a lot of views initially. The results will be determined over the next few years. Not the first 4 episodes.

I understand streaming series swapping to weekly releases, and why they might do it. I don't even neccesarily think it's bad... I just want to binge watch.

Enjoyed episode 4. Still have no faith that this doesn't go completely off the rails before it is all said and done. Thesmall changes will add up quickly.
