What's the rating on this show? I tried to get my 14 year old to start reading the books this past summer and he just wasn't interested after reading a few chapters.

I'm wondering if the show is age appropriate, it may entice him to pick up the books again.

I don't know where to start… Lan and Moraine bathing together, Abel is a piece of crap, Perrins wife, everyone in every town already knows that trollocs are a thing, lots of weird stuff. And where is that Two Rivers traditional values. Mieren basically told them I'm leaving now so y'all can have awesome unmarried sexy time.

Overall I thought it was good, a bit rushed in the beginning but pacing was better in the 2 and 3 episodes.

They definitely got a good bunch of stuff right in episode 2 and 3 for the book fans.

Thom had a great intro and may be my favorite so far, Nyneave sneaking up on Lan was perfect. Mat taking the ruby hilted dagger was cool to see. Looking forward to discussing tomorrow!

Don't some in the center/southern part of the continent think of Trollocs as a myth or at least that they aren't a thing anymore? I mean they haven't seen Trollocs in the Two Rivers in who knows how long. They don't even know what Manetheren is anymore.

Rand: Right, do you want to take turns then?
Mat: you think she is up for it?

You are right, outside of the borderlands everyone pretty much thinks they are just tales to scare your children with. Even the white cloaks don't believe they are real until like Book 11.

It was entertaining. Read some of the books like 15 years ago so I don't remember much. Not gonna care if they change it up that much.

Some spotty cgi here and there but I will take it in order to get a new fantasy series.

Trollocs in still shots looks really cool and other shots looked super cgi and moving weird.

I wonder when we'll see Padan Fain again. We're kind of passed Shadar Logoth so I'm curious how they're going to weave in Fain and Mordeth

Obviously didn't see Mordeth, but was Padan at shadar Logoth with them in the books? I thought he ran into them after.

So far I think it's pretty comparable quality-wise to the second or third season of The Expanse. Not the greatest thing I've ever watched, but solid enough for me to be invested in, and I can look past any CGI issues. Looking forward to more. I think Nynaeve is the standout so far.

Minor book spoilers:

I don't think he had any "screen" time at Shadar Logoth in the books, but he was there, having been forced to accompany the Shadow forces so they could follow the good guys. That's where he met Mordeth and became the Padan Fain we grew to know and loathe in the later books.

Impressions so far:
  • I didn't like the beginning. For me Rand looking over his shoulder and seeing he Myrddraal and his horse's feet not touching the ground was always spooky to me.
  • I understand the inclusion of Perrin's wife to lend itself to his character arc. Didn't like it at first.
  • Shadar Logoth was very well done. Wish Mordeth would have been seen but it wasn't necessary.
  • I like the weaving of the flows.
  • I didn't like Moraines' comment in the first episode "There are rumors of four ta'avern in the Two Rivers.
  • Episode 1 seemed like a pilot. Episode 2 was better.
  • I really like the White Cloaks uniforms.
  • Interesting that they haven't referred to the two sides of the One power.

I really hated the intro speach easpecially about the cause of the breaking. That and the the dragon could be male or female.

Perrin being already married changes a ton of his character arc.

They took Weaving out of the show.

Edit: Didn't read above. Only 5 minutes into E1.

Edit2: Rosamund Pike is the blandest actor ever.

Episode 1

Trollocs were really cool. Lan and Morraine fighting off the trollocs was badass. Pretty happy with the cast so far - Padan Fain was a hoot.

My favorite little detail was seeing the Crane on Rands dads sword. That was ****in awesome.

The Perrin having a wife already thing was weird but I agree with others in this thread it sets up his later conflict pretty well. I mean even his reaction after was pretty bad acting wise. And then him just shrugging it off and riding off with everyone else. Haha.

Agree them all riding off at the end was super sudden and felt awkward and rushed. I guess the writers were too afraid of spending too much time in two rivers at the beginning and boring people?

Anyway show definitely has potential and I'll keep watching. Can't wait to see the white coats

Seeing Lan during the attack was badass.

4 ta'averen was an eye roll.

Maybe they will do some more flashbacks to what happened during the breaking.

And for the record, very few blood and ashes or hair tugging.

It is a little weird hearing the actual pronunciations of the names, when I read the books I guess I've been saying it wrong.

Sepinwall not liking it is not a good sign. He has good opinions and tends to give shows real chances even when it's not his cup of tea. I overlap with a lot of his opinions and like reading his reviews. He's not your normal Rolling Stone writer.

I'm getting nervous but I also knew this show wouldn't be the next GoT, it's just not as edgy of a story. However, his opinions on character and plot development worry me the most. No matter how good the story is, the show writers need to bring the characters to life with good screenwriting and actor choices.

Even after all that I'm still optimistic I will enjoy the show as a book nerd. However, it might not draw in the masses and therefore be at risk of cancellation.
Having watche dall 3, and then reading his review, it really feels like he only watched the first episode.

Watched all 3. Overall, I'm not impressed. I'm glad to have an adaptation and was expecting lots of changes, but it just doesn't feel right. I'll keep watching, but this is a miss for me so far as someone who loves the books.

Seems cheaply done compared to, say, Game of Thrones
Chase McGuire

Not just that, but it feels like it's making the same mistakes as The Hobbit, opting for poorly done CGI for sweeping landscape shots and scale. Changes to the story are expected, but the production design is what disappoints me most. Nothing feels grounded and real, like early GoT episodes did, even with their lower budget.

Rewatched all 3 episodes and had time to sleep on it, I'm passed the shock of it and really actually think it's good however I don't see it garnering a huge following. My biggest gripe is statement from Morraine that I think is a mistake.

She says when telling Lan they are headed to the two rivers next that there are "rumors of four ta'veren there". I don't care about her saying there are four but how would there be rumors of ta'veren somewhere without it being major news and every sister and darkfriend in Randland descending upon the Two Rivers? They don't even explain what ta'veren are. Maybe I missed something? They should have stuck with the theme that the average person in Randland doesn't know squat.

I'm not overly impressed so far as I've read half the books. I feel like I'm watching elements of a teen romance show from the CW integrated with a big budget production.

The characters feel true to the books so far and I'm realizing now that is what I was really wishing for in the show.

Rand- awesome and already getting hints of that anger bubbling up.
Mat - already playing the hero that doesn't want to be
Perrin - average so far but definitely getting that brood vibe
Egwene - not much to say so far but but should shine as soon as she gets taken by the seanchan
Nyneave- awesome already
Morraine - Not impressed but somewhat true to the character
Lan - good so far
Thom- awesome

Glad to see the **** showrunners from early SyFy channel shows are still employeed. Good for them!

Also when I read the books and pictured Two Rivers, a small farming/hunting community tucked away from the rest of the world; ethnic diversity was not what came to mind.

Amazon going to work in black and asian elves when they present their LOTR show as well?

I agree this is ridiculous but I try to look past it. Modern day film and television makers seem to think that any representation of a "population" - wherever it may be - fictional or not - has to look like the latest uppity art show put on in NYC by some super progressive "genius".

Race and ethnicity is one thing. But down to the edgy piercings, hair styles, it made me chuckle. I enjoyed the episodes nonetheless but, found it really funny the first Dark Friend looks like your local bartender/artist who sells her art at the farmers market on Sundays.

It almost seems anachronistic, no? Every group of people doesn't have to look like a progressive focus group.

I have a question about Thom. Now it has been nearly a decade since I've read the books, but I seem to recall his multi colored cloak was all over, wasn't it? The show gave the fan service with us seeing the inner jacket multi colored patches. But I always imagined thom wearing a more elegant equivalent of a Twister game board as his cloak.

Am I just misremembering?

I did not enjoy the first episode because of the pacing and lack of backstory (even as a book reader,) and some of the character changes, but the second two settled me down.

For the most part they smoothed most of those out and made them pretty inconsequential.

I'm not always opposed to Hollywood adding in artificial diversity...but in this case it just doesn't really work. They go out of their way to force it in there to the detriment of feeling connected to something unique/different. Add to that (as a previous comment alluded to) the teen romance feel of things and a general "too sterile" approach to everything...it just feels lifeless so far.

Not that any of that will stop me from watching all of it lol.
