How long do you want to ignore this user?
This is a long thread, can any of you epic fantasy mavens tell me if this is a good show to watch? I was a huge fan of the series, even the full slog through the middle before Sanderson smashed a walk off dinger in the last 4 books.

After seeing what happened to LoTR I'm afraid of ruining the books

If you think the LotR movies were poor adaptations, you should stay far away from this show.

If you can make it through the first season, it gets better and better. This season has been great.

Very different from the books though, fair warning.

About as much as ASOIAF and the Game of Thrones HBO series or more?

I can stomach it if I look at it as a new cycle through the wheel instead of a recreation of what happened in the books' cycle through time.

It's an adaptation that's given nowhere near enough time to properly adapt the source material without changes. On top of that, season 1 dealt with COVID restrictions and then had to rewrite the last 2 episodes when Mat's actor left the show.

Having said that, there were some unforced errors as well that were just dumb. For me season one was meh overall with a couple of solid episodes, season 2 was solid with at least 1 great episode and season 3 has had nothing below a solid so far.

If your're going to be upset at every little change you will not enjoy it, if you can overlook the changes and pass them off as another turning of the wheel you might be ok.

I think this show may honestly have started off worse than the LOTR show but in my eyes exceeded it and I look forward to each episode.

LOTR I quit in the second season, bored me to death like the GOT prequel.

Ah, I see a waifish Perrin and that the two Rivers resembles a United Colors of Benetton ad….why am I not surprised. At least they got Rand right

Everyone else has stated the exact mindset you need to take.
Its not an exact retelling of the books
The first season is overall rough (though parts were still good)
It does get better and better each episode in season 2, and season 3 is another level up from that.

If I remember correctly, Tor.com has a paraphrased release with some commentary included. I used it to "reread" the whole series before the final few books released.

Well that was unexpected and will anger many of the book fans. A solid episode, but a significant departure from the books.

I'm okay with it.

Wasn't a big fan of how Loial was portrayed, I understand they didn't have budget to just have a CGI character walking around the whole time. And to be honest, I don't remember Loial doing a whole lot in the books, other than the lore of ogier/stedding during the breaking. I don't see them adding that to the show other than the few throwaway lines mentioning it.

Loial's speech at the Great Stump convinced the Ogier not to read the Book of Translation and leave the world prior to the Last Battle. Important in-world, but agreed that he's a character that isn't plot-critical.

If this was a departure the latest episode goes much further a field. It is a good episode but there are a lot more departures.

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.

Even as another turning there would be some things that are fundamental truths. That is my biggest complaint. This season as a show is fine but the another turning of the wheel is just a BS take IMO.

TV/Movies rarely stay true to source material and this is no exception.

Really liked this season the best, but the two big changes at end are disappointing. Especially the one dealing with Amyrlin Seat.

I was referring specifically to the spoilered changes. From an in-universe perspective for different Wheel turnings, the only thing that has to be true is that the Dragon is a man. From an out of universe perspective, I generally agree and would prefer that the major story beats remain pretty aligned with the source material.

Although I'd love sticking closer to the books, they do have good reasons for some. Specifically they mentioned there isn't enough for Siuane to do in the show after this point to justify keeping the actress around or likely to spend valuable episode time on her.

Siuane wasn't a great presence in the books and neither was Moraine until Rosamund Same Face become Moraine.

So far really really hate what they've done with Mat's character. Absolutely terrible. He's got none of his joie d'vivre, roguish charm, or charisma; just seems like a sour heroin addict with a gambling problem.

As someone who read 4-5 books and remembers absolutely nothing, that was another stellar episode.

This show has become the best fantasy live action on tv right now compared to LOTR and GoT and it's not even close.

Son of a… just realized that was the season finale

I thought they did a good job with him in some parts this season. When he made that ***** joke about the white tower I about died. And of course the training ground scene. I think they got about 60% there...just needed a bit more to really refine his character.

I might be forgetting a lot as it's been probably 15 years since I read the series, but isn't he pretty much a carefree playboy until he gets the Shadar Logoth dagger from Padan Fain?
