If you think the LotR movies were poor adaptations, you should stay far away from this show.

If you can make it through the first season, it gets better and better. This season has been great.
Very different from the books though, fair warning.

This is a long thread, can any of you epic fantasy mavens tell me if this is a good show to watch? I was a huge fan of the series, even the full slog through the middle before Sanderson smashed a walk off dinger in the last 4 books.
After seeing what happened to LoTR I'm afraid of ruining the books
I need to see if I can find the guide for reading teh books and skipping all the filler, lol.heddleston said:

Well that was unexpected and will anger many of the book fans. A solid episode, but a significant departure from the books.

It's an adaptation that's given nowhere near enough time to properly adapt the source material without changes. On top of that, season 1 dealt with COVID restrictions and then had to rewrite the last 2 episodes when Mat's actor left the show.
Having said that, there were some unforced errors as well that were just dumb. For me season one was meh overall with a couple of solid episodes, season 2 was solid with at least 1 great episode and season 3 has had nothing below a solid so far.
If your're going to be upset at every little change you will not enjoy it, if you can overlook the changes and pass them off as another turning of the wheel you might be ok.
Loial's speech at the Great Stump convinced the Ogier not to read the Book of Translation and leave the world prior to the Last Battle. Important in-world, but agreed that he's a character that isn't plot-critical.AtlAg05 said:Micah97 said:

I'm okay with it.
Wasn't a big fan of how Loial was portrayed, I understand they didn't have budget to just have a CGI character walking around the whole time. And to be honest, I don't remember Loial doing a whole lot in the books, other than the lore of ogier/stedding during the breaking. I don't see them adding that to the show other than the few throwaway lines mentioning it.
If this was a departure the latest episode goes much further a field. It is a good episode but there are a lot more departures.Claude! said:Loial's speech at the Great Stump convinced the Ogier not to read the Book of Translation and leave the world prior to the Last Battle. The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.AustinScubaAg said:If this was a departure the latest episode goes much further a field. Even as another turning there would be some things that are fundamental truths. That is my biggest complaint. This season as a show is fine but the another turning of the wheel is just a BS take IMO.Claude! said:The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. I was referring specifically to the spoilered changes. From an in-universe perspective for different Wheel turnings, the only thing that has to be true is that the Dragon is a man. From an out of universe perspective, I generally agree and would prefer that the major story beats remain pretty aligned with the source material.AustinScubaAg said:Even as another turning there would be some things that are fundamental truths. TV/Movies rarely stay true to source material and this is no exception.

Although I'd love sticking closer to the books, they do have good reasons for some. Specifically they mentioned there isn't enough for Siuane to do in the show after this point to justify keeping the actress around or likely to spend valuable episode time on her.

So far really really hate what they've done with Mat's character. Absolutely terrible. He's got none of his joie d'vivre, roguish charm, or charisma; just seems like a sour heroin addict with a gambling problem.

I thought they did a good job with him in some parts this season. When he made that ***** joke about the white tower I about died. And of course the training ground scene. I think they got about 60% there...just needed a bit more to really refine his character.Quo Vadis? said:

Wouldn't be my first reproductive organ joke about Tar Valon...javajaws said:I thought they did a good job with him in some parts this season. Really liked this season the best, but the two big changes at end are disappointing. Especially the one dealing with Amyrlin Seat.
