Ah yes. But they were also eyeless and can hide/appear in shadows? Maybe I need to do a reread as well!

yes. They can travel through shadows as well.

Trollocs will be interesting... Perrin talking with wolves may be hard to portray. The dream world as well. I really think the channeling will be tough. The five different aspects. The magic in WOT is much more important than magic in GOT which presents more challenges imo.

Yea there are so many parts of the story that visually will be very cool/interesting to see come to the screen. What about the shadow world thing that connects dressings? If I recall correctly... but can't remember the name of that place exactly.

I started a re-read of the series due to this thread. How do you guys think they will present the warder's cloak?
Wow, good on you. I love the series and am/was a huge fan, but I think there's no way in hell I could do an entire re-read. I've forgotten a lot I'm sure but the series will be fun.

For those that shudder when they look at 14 800-page books, the audiobooks are great. They're on audible.com for 1 credit each. I put them on in the car or when I'm just working around the house. I get through them a lot faster doing that than sitting down to read.

I remember when there was a few year delay between releases of book 11 and 12, I actually did a full series "summary reread" on Tor.com to get a full grasp of the series again before starting the first of the 3 final books. It was much faster than rereading the entire series, kind of a hybrid between fully reading the text and reading a super condensed Wikipedia-like overview.

I nearly always did a reread before each new book came out. So I have read the first one many times! Only read the last one once though....

Tor has some excellent WoT summaries. There's also a "read-along" type thing they did a few years ago - a re-read with commentary from one of their writers who is a big fan of the series. She went chapter by chapter through a good chunk of it all, I think.

It won't be hard to get this to TV-MA. He didn't get terribly gory with details, but Trollocs left a horrific trail of destruction everywhere they went. Entrails and body parts all over the place, men, women, and children. Ashamen: blowing up dudes heads Plus Aes Sedai and Wise Ones regularly got nekkid during their training and trials, so it's not a stretch for there to be a crap load of nudity even without any sex scenes.

Ok. Y'all talked me into it. I'm remembering some of that now.

As to the magic - in my mind that dictates whether the series succeeds. So much of it was mental - with little physical manifestation. How do you portray those epic battles between Nynaeve and the black ajah? Women stand around and stare intently at each other?

The wolves, Rands craziness, dreams and visions. All of it will be really hard. I wonder if Sanderson helped conceptually with those challenges?

It was always "weaves" right? Just maybe some fancy CGI lightwork that looks like a stained glass window being thrown at each other?

I kind of think you have to abandon that. Make it fireballs and lightning and other more solid manifestations of the magic. The invisible weaves that cause invisible hammers and compulsion or hallucinations are almost impossible to create imo

So I was remembering incorrectly, but I could've sworn there was a failed attempt to make WOT a tv series in the past - but was thinking about the horrendous attempt at televising the Sword of Shannara trilogy (another series I'm a big fan of). Anyone remember this garbage?

There was a single episode that aired in the early 2010s late at night on FXX. It was Lews Theron and the Dark one having a battle of words after he went mad. Been a long time since I watched it.

I'll see if I can find it.

ETA: found it

whole episode

article about how nobody had any idea it happened or anything about it
that pilot is terrible.

From my understanding they rushed a pilot just to make sure that they didn't lose rights to it.

The costumes were super weird. The whole series gives a mid-evil vibe and they looked like they were dressed futuristically.

ETA: you also have to remember this was 2009. Lost having a CGI polar bear done badly was hi tech back then.

I disagree with him. I didn't write this but there is a lot I agree with:

Quote:

staunchly disagree. Physical attributes are half the book. The differences between Andorans, Tierians, Shinerians, the Sea Folk, Saldeans etc. was vividly painted. As much as the differences in the cities, personalities, mannerisms, you take away from the story when you take the individualism from the distinct cultures represented. Each cultural people was given depth, pains were taken to describe appearances, heights, mannerisms, politics, hairstyles, clothing choices, how the homes looked. (IE tiles on roofs and bricks were not introduced to Two Rivers until refugees brought their new fangled different methods with them.)

The actors and actresses chosen are gorgeous and talented people - but the guy playing Perrin has no shoulders to speak of. How would anyone believe he had been years apprenticed to a blacksmith with his current build?

Of course people have preconceived notions of what characters are "supposed" to look like, a vivid picture was painted over and over. Thom, is supposed to be white haired and with long white mustache... if he was played by someone with brown hair and clean shaven it would be just as jarring and disappointing. If Tar Valon doesn't have fanciful Orgier nature inspired buildings and Cahrien doesn't have topless towers it will be disappointing. There wasn't much left to the imagination in the fancifully vivid description of Robert Jordan's world and characters because he spelled it out in painstaking detail down to embroidery and materials of clothing. If Faile doesn't have a hawkish nose and tilted eyes she doesn't match the description ground into the pages every time we read about her. If tinkers wagons and garb are color glaring and so bright and mismatched as to be painful to behold it will be disappointing.

What else are they going to change? Will Emonds field still be as isolated and prim or will the "stout two rivers wollens" turn into slinky low cut and clinging garments to show off the figures of the actresses... will they forget that the women's circle keeps things (prude) 'proper' and pre marital relations are uncommon, scandalous and typically sex means "now we have to get married " to two rivers folks? Because that wholesomeness is a theme over and over and plays part of the plot and the personalities of the Emonds fielders. A backwoods set of towns where the farthest most folks get is Tarien Ferry, would not have a cultural mix. Tam al'thor coming home with an outland wife was something major for the town to talk about. Nothing ever happens there and news is months old by the time it reaches The two rivers. A Gleeman or a single wagon merchant or A Lady was big news to set the simple small isolated town gossiping and excited for a month and more alone. It was a bland little hamlet of stubborn farmers who were cut off from the outside world. Any basic genetic drift would pretty much ensure that the locals would be pretty homogeneous rather than diverse.

I'm still excited that a series I've read the covers off of from so many rereadings is finally going to be made for the screen, I'm still going to watch it, I still fervently hope to enjoy it, but I sincerely hope that they utilize the source material more faithfully. Is it really asking too much to honor the author's arduous and painstaking details? GOT went south once they started deviating and taking liberties after the TV Series surpassed the books.

Personally it detracts from the diverse cultures represented in the story by ignoring the characteristics presented as regional and unique. It mattered enough for the story that pages upon pages were dedicated to describing attributes of peoples and places. So why throw all that out the window during casting?

I agree with this sentiment 100%. The problem with voicing something like that is people label you a racist and it's not worth the argument.

I'm a huge WoT dork. I'm excited they are bringing it to TV and it sounds like they are putting the resources into the show to make it awesome.

I have resigned myself to the fact that I will have to grit my teeth through the SJW decisions to watch the show. No doubt I will be rolling my eyes often.

Or in WoT parlance, tugging my proverbial braid often.

I have still never finished this series. Quit after book 8. I've never loved and hated a series simultaneously like this one.

I remember little about these books at this point. Can't believe the first book is almost 30 years old.

Will watch though!

i don't have much of an issue with the casting choices, except possibly that Perrin looks a little small (hard to tell from the sole picture I've seen, though). Diversity casting is a thing now; unless it's a case where race is integral to the character, I don't get too worked up when casting doesn't exactly match my vision (or the source material). Nynaeve does need a single braid, though (until she gets to Tarabon, of course).

See I'm on the opposite end. Nynaeve can tug on her hair all day...doesn't have to be a single braid. I don't even need her to have that physical manifestation. She can have the same character without tugging on anything! But one of the integral parts of the story early on (IMHO) is that they are all the same from a backwoods isolated place. The Two Rivers suddenly being racially diverse is moronic. They all look similar except Rand who is taller and different because of his outlander mom....
Micah97

Race was integral with the characters. At least in the sense they were suppose to be a homogenous, end of nowhere community. Rand's dad bringing an outlander wife home was an anomaly. The WoT works is extremely diverse with different cultures, but each culture had a uniqueness to it as each population pretty much stuck together. The malkier were a blend of different eastern cultures. I always pictured lan as Mongolian.

In the end, while irritated, I'm still going to watch the series. I started reading the books in 1990. Too excited to not watch it.

I'm with you, I would love for people to be able to just cast accurate to the source material. As long as these people can act, it will be fine.

I'm about 40% through book 1 reread and they really need to make Rand taller with the lighter eyes to emphasize his Aiel heritage imo. That is a HUGE part of the story.

I think we are going to have to get used to diversity casting which in some cases is fine, but absolutely stupid when it changes structural pillars of a story.

What is accurate to the source material? Is it how they're actually described, or just how you pictured them in your own mind?

If you look at the character descriptions in fan wikis (here or here for example), there's nothing about the Emond's Field folks that says what color skin they have. The only places they're explicitly white is in fan art. They all have dark hair and brown eyes, but nothing really beyond that other than body structure. As described, these actors *technically* fit the source material and they look similar to each other, so it still fits the homogeneous aspect.

Frankly 5-9 blond haired Rosamund Pike looks nothing like the books depiction of the short dark haired Moraine. And there are many times in the book where her height is brought up including her irritation at being so short. IMO 5-2 Jenna Coleman is a lot closer to how the books describe Moraine.

But in the grand scheme of things it does not matter. The only casting look that matters from a story standpoint is that Rand needs to look different from everyone else and a lot like the people they cast as the Aiel.
