I've not read the books.

Ep 1 I had no clue what was going on or who anyone was, that was somewhat off putting but powered through it.

Ep 2 started to get some clarity around some of the pieces, things start getting interesting with the weird dark city thing.

Ep 3 everyone is split up and start to get a little more im depth with the different characters

Ep 4 and nooooow I'm hooked. May need to go grab the book… just not sure I'm up to reading 4.4 million words… I mean what would I do if GRRM finished a book while I was in the middle of that, who am I kidding… I'd be done long before that happened.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that the end of episode 4 is a head fake. If it's not, I'm immediately out.

Episode 4 really kicked it up a notch! Keeping the readers in their toes as to who is TDR. By the way how could Logain even see her weaves/amount of power? Hopefully not another slip up.

- Played up the Red are a bunch of *****es.
- Thom taking on the fade was sweet
- the fades movements were pretty sweet
- the info on the power was much easier to digest

Nyneave healing everyone in the cave at once was a bit much but I'm not mad. She is one of the strongest women in the books.

I still can't get on board with them keeping open the idea of a female dragon. How would she be likely to destroy the world with no taint which they clearly explained this episode? I get why they are but it's a clear logical mistake.

I understand streaming series swapping to weekly releases, and why they might do it. I don't even neccesarily think it's bad... I just want to binge watch.

So glad they are releasing over time. It's going to be better. I hate binge watching.
Maybe we can compromise and release 2-3 a week
release them all at once.

no one forces anyone to binge. watch them at your leisure.

For bad shows, I want to binge to hate watch my way through it . For good shows, I want the released weekly so there is more discussion on the show.

Would you rather have sex with Ana De Armas 10 times in one night, or 3 times in one night the first time, then once a week for the next 7 weeks?

I'm with you. As they explain more about the Power, the idea of the Dragon being a woman becomes more and more ridiculous.

Enjoyed episode 4. Still have no faith that this doesn't go completely off the rails before it is all said and done. Thesmall changes will add up quickly.

Hopefully it does. By book 5 or so, Jordan was obviously making up new, low grade plot **** to drag out the series and sell more books. Remember the multi-book drought subplot? What a pile of crap.

Best choice the show writers could make to is take a chainsaw to the series as they convert it to TV. There is so much extraneous junk in the books.

Then you can space out your watching on a weekly basis. nothing stops you from exercising self control. The rest of us can binge however we want.

again, win- win.

and I would rather have sex with my wife rather than Ana De Armas.

Doing it this way generates more discussions at work and online. Hard to discuss a series episode by episode when everyone is watching at their own pace.

I wish I could binge all these, but I've always thought releasing them week by week generates more buzz and grows your audience better than just dumping them all online at once.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a fantastic series and unbelievably creative. He's the biggest world builder since Tolkien. But Jordan was clearly dragging out the series by the end, and I don't think the tv show will suffer if it drops a lot of that stuff completely (assuming it makes it that long).

Take the Seanchan. I seriously wonder if Jordan read the Sword of Truth, decided an old world reconquering sounded pretty cool, and dropped a version of it in his book series to the tune of about 3k new pages.

Well except we already had The Great Hunt and the Hawkwings armies returning in 1990. Wizards first rule came out 4 years later.

There are a lot of similarities between the two and Goodkind was accused of lifting ideas from other writers.

I wouldn't be surprised. I never felt RJ was padding his books. I thought he was struggling with the massive world. Goodkind was always a second rate hack. And in the mid 90s i was a huge fan of both....

Same issue with GRRM and why he'll never finish ASoIaF. He will pass before he finishes just like RJ. Difference is, he's specifically said in his will that a Brandon Sanderson situation CANT happen. So we'll never know the real ending to song of ice and fire

Sorry for the derail

As I've watched the show, and read some of the thoughts from both Brandon Sanderson and the show runner Rafe Judkins, I think I am fine with some of the characters not looking exactly how I pictured. What is more important is they behave and act in a way that matches their book versions. They don't have to make every single decision the same way, but there are major story points I think would be ideal to keep and so far they have.

Mat is a much, much ****tier version of the book character. It's either a deliberate choice or someone just didn't understand that character well.

I have the advantage on you. I was reading both series as they came out.

I honestly don't think RJ (James Oliver Rigney Jr.) was doing that. He was successful with the Conan books and his Fallon saga. The WOT was his pinnacle. He was rich and famous. I don't see him compromising his legacy for a few more dollars. He had talked about prequels and the like. There was a ton of money to be had. No reason to compromise his most famous series.

I read somewhere that he married his editor; and there was a corresponding increase in the book size afterwards. I remember getting frustrated in one of the middle books when there was four pages of what the wind was doing.

I also skipped most of the Perrin chapters when he was searching for Faile; I just didn't care if she was ever found.

Agreed on episode 4, great world-building episode.

Side notes:
I kept waiting for Elyas to show up, also getting to see that scene with Thom!!

He was married to his editor but that was years before book 1 came out. They were married until his death

The Perrin and Faile chapters suck for sure.

Something occurred to me just now big time on this one. Maybe it's not her channeling that he saw? Maybe it was actually the healing aftermath of the channeling?

I equate it to balefire. People don't necessarily always see others channeling because of prebuilt constraints on the universe, but if a channeler is shooting a fireball or balefire, everyone sees that. The blue glow was not Nynaeve's channeling, it was the actual force after the channeling.

Feel free to call me a nerd now.

Probably right. Show writers way of conflating the non book reader about who the real Dragon Reborn is.

I think it's pretty clear at this point that they won't deviate from the books. Most everyone else's role is not subtle at all and being clear, only one person left.

So hoping Rafe was just talking to create suspense for the show.

I wonder if they'll ever show Mat with a quarterstaff this eason

Or it could be his "Talent", there were some Aes Sedai that could see/sense saidin being held. My biggest eyeroll for that scene was the warder piercing the shield, but whatever.

I bet they use that skill after he gets "healed" in Tar Valon to introduce Galad/Gawyn, probably next season.

Sounds like they're just taking a bit to get to the saidin/saidar explanation, which is a relief.

On another note, I actually really liked episode 4. I like that they found a way to introduce Logain, Liandrin and the concept of male channelers going mad together. So much of Logain's story happens off-screen in the books, but getting to see him gentled was cool and the changes will not alter future storylines. He ends up in the same place. Establishing Liandrin already will help down the road as well.

Also enjoyed seeing the Grinwells and getting Thom v Fade. It's a combo of scenes from the book that'll get the same idea of their flight to Caemlyn across. Overall it felt like the show hit its stride a little for me.

Also, my GF is a non-reader and is totally in after that episode, so whatever they're doing with this guessing game about the Dragon is working. She must have guessed 3 or 4 different people within that episode alone and was wanting another when it was over.
Independent George

It's pretty cool that Nyneave was there for the gentling of Logain. Will make it that much better when she heals it and has to hold him herself since we saw two fairly strong women struggling with it.
